WORCESTERSHIRE ACUTE HOSPITALS NHS TRUST JOB DESCRIPTION Post Title: Senior Medical Laboratory Assistant Pay Band: AfC Band 3 Hours: 37.5 hours per week Contract: Permanent Location / Department: Worcestershire Royal Hospital Haematology Accountable to: Head Biomedical Scientist (Band 8) Reports to: Haematology Manager Ref: Key Working Relationships: INTERNAL: Biomedical Scientists from all Pathology disciplines; MLAs; Clinical Scientists and Consultant Clinical Biochemists /Haematologists; Medical and Nursing staff; other Health Care Professionals; Medical Secretaries and Clerical staff; Porters; staff from Supplies, Estates and Human Resources departments. EXTERNAL: GPs and staff working in surgeries and clinics; staff working in other Pathology laboratories; Community Nurses; patients and relatives; UKAS/MHRA inspectors. Risk Assessment: This post involves regular use of display screen equipment for extended periods of time. Job Purpose: The post holder, not being qualified, is required to act under supervision and within appropriate occupational guidelines, referring to registered BMS staff for technical guidance and Haematology Consultants for clinical advice.

Works as part of the laboratory team with specific responsibilities; sample reception, referral of Samples to other laboratories. Responsible for stocks management for Haematology The post holder has neither budgetary responsibility nor any authority to place requisitions. Key Duties: 1.Responsible for the monitoring of sample flow and data entry from the Specimen Reception area. To assist in the labelling & data entry of requests when agreed with BMS.

2.To be proficient in all aspects of the routine use of the LIMS, in accordance with departmental procedures. 3.Responsible for the monitoring of referral requests to other approved laboratories with specific regard to form and sample requirements for each individual laboratory. 4.Responsible for receipt of reports from referral laboratories and input of results to the LIMS. This may include direct data entry (numerical data) or scanning and attachment of text reports.

5.To take receipt of incoming mail and distribute throughout the department in a timely fashion. This will include the processing of misdirected reports. 6.To regularly review lists of Incomplete requests for investigations sent to other laboratories, and to take appropriate action to ensure the receipt of results within identified timescales so that patient treatment is not adversely affected. To bring to the attention of senior Biomedical Scientists any difficulties experienced in obtaining an appropriate response from the referral laboratory.

7.Responsible for loading of samples on analysers, loading of consumables, analyser daily/weekly maintenance and running of IQC samples. Validation of IQC results is only permitted by HCPC registered Band 5 & above BMS. 8.To perform simple laboratory tests under supervision of HCPC registered staff. 9.To train and instruct other members of staff, of any grade, in all aspects of the role within the dimensions of this post.

10.Supervises and receives stock delivered to the department ensuring storage is in accordance with departmental procedures & that acceptance documentation is completed. Maintain stock rotation to ensure efficient management of reagents. 11.Ensures regular stock inventories are carried out and a senior BMS is informed of supply deficiencies. 12.Responsible for filling & disposal of Blood & Bone Marrow slides in accordance with departmental procedures.

13.Responsible for routine monitoring/cleaning of the laboratory benches & equipment and completing relevant documentation. 14.The scanning and loading of laboratory documentation onto the Laboratory QMS system ( I Passport). 15.Carries out audits as requested by the senior BMS/Quality Lead. 16.To report any non-conformances or incidents to qualified BMS/Quality Lead for entry onto DATIX and I Passport.

17.To respond to telephone calls from medical and nursing staff within the hospital, or staff from surgeries and clinics, so that requests for results, additional/urgent investigations and technical advice are dealt with to the satisfaction of the caller, in accordance with departmental procedures and within limits of knowledge and capability, referring calls to qualified / senior staff as appropriate. To give out authorised results only, but only to appropriate staff as identified in the departmental Telephoning of Results procedure. To refer requests for technical advice to qualified Biomedical Scientists, as appropriate; to refer requests for clinical advice to Consultants, as appropriate this is to ensure correct information is relayed to service users. To respond to any complaints that arise courteously, referring complainants to appropriate senior staff in all instances.

18.To monitor and where required participate in the scanning of request forms so that electronic images are readily available. 19.To ensure request forms, and any other documents containing confidential information, are retained and discarded in accordance with Trust and departmental procedures. To be familiar and practise in accordance with Data Protection regulations. 20.To work in accordance with and maintain adherence to the safety standards outlined in the departmental Health and Safety Policy, thereby ensuring that the laboratory complies with regulatory requirements and is a safe, secure, clean and tidy working environment.

21.To read, understand and practise in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for all relevant tasks performed within the laboratory. 22.To develop an understanding of the function and use of Information Technology and to apply this knowledge in day-to-day practice. This includes the use of word processing packages, spreadsheets, databases and electronic communications. 23.To work under the direct and indirect supervision of qualified staff within the department.

Direct supervision involves the provision of detailed training in all aspects of a procedure, with work being closely monitored and assessed. Indirect supervision occurs when the post holder has clearly demonstrated consistent competence in all aspects of a procedure and is directed to work with close inspection of practice no longer required. 24.To participate in mandatory training thus enabling the Trust to satisfy its regulatory requirements as an employer. 25.To participate in and contribute to regular general departmental meetings that involve all staff to ensure that clear lines of communication are established and maintained thereby enabling discussion of and appropriate reaction to all issues pertaining to service provision and staff interests.

26.To produce minutes/notes/action points generating from the general departmental staff meetings, for authorisation by the Haematology Manager / Quality Manager, within identified timescales; these notes should accurately reflect the content of these meetings, and include minutes of any outcomes / action points, thereby providing an effective chronicle of the issues raised, decisions reached and directives given. 27.To work in conjunction with all other staff, as directed, to achieve and maintain IOS15189:2012 accreditation status, which demonstrates that the work carried out within the department is to clearly defined and nationally recognised high standards. 28.To participate in departmental Quality Management activities in a manner commensurate with the post. 29.To participate in training activities so that own competence to practise in the laboratory is demonstrably maintained through on-going assessment, as appropriate.

Education: The post holder will be required to hold / attain the IBMS Certificate of Achievement or equivalent qualification.
