Responsibilities: Job Summary
The ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY TECHNICAL ASSISTANT I is responsible for performing various lab assistant duties in one of the Anatomic Pathology sections (Cytology, Histology, or Surgical Pathology) including receiving and accessioning, processing specimens, organizing workload, and assisting in other functions of the lab as needed. Is responsible for producing quality patient care through Laboratory Services to patients of all age groups. Maintains confidentiality in the processing of specimens and handling of all laboratory data.
- Location: Shea Medical Center, 9003 E Shea Blvd, Scottsdale
- Hours: Full-Time, Monday-Friday, Flexible Start Times Between 7am-10am

The ANATOMIC PATHOLOGY TECHNICAL ASSISTANT I is responsible for performing various lab assistant duties in one of the Anatomic Pathology sections (Cytology, Histology, or Surgical Pathology) including receiving and accessioning, processing specimens, organizing workload, and assisting in other functions of the lab as needed. Is responsible for producing quality patient care through Laboratory Services to patients of all age groups. Maintains confidentiality in the processing of specimens and handling of all laboratory data.
- Receives specimens from couriers or other laboratory personnel and verifies specimen integrity, acceptability, and labeling. Follows proper procedure for specimen identification and/or rejection including follow up and proper documentation. Maintains confidentiality in the processing of specimens and handling of all laboratory data.
- Accessions specimens into LIS system and appropriately labels specimens while maintaining specimen integrity. Prints and verifies corresponding cassettes and is responsible for assuring case is appropriately assembled for processing.
- Performs specimen preparation and processing following laboratory procedures by manual or automated methods in accordance with instructions in the section procedure manual and defined standards of performance.
- Prepares, stains, and coverslips specimens for diagnosis by Pathologists or designee, including intra-operative specimen results needed to determine to course of procedure or operation. Case slide assembly and distribution.
- Prepares reagents, media and/or solutions used in bioanalytical procedures. Maintains staining line and changes reagent and solutions as required. Properly disposes of chemical and biohazard waste appropriately.
- Handles routine telephone inquiries and messages courteously and efficiently. Refers other inquiries to appropriate person and follows through with requests, takes messages, transfers calls and/or investigates situations as needed.
- Supports basic tasks and operations such as block/slide filing, ordering and stocks supplies and helps with maintaining supply inventory.
- Maintains the internal Quality Control process daily by performing and recording appropriate quality control procedures and documents according to laboratory policy and procedure.
- General laboratory activities including equipment maintenance, documentation, cleanliness, OSHA requirements, chemical hygiene, biohazards and blood borne pathogens guidelines. Demonstrates capability of safely handling carcinogenic substances, odors and other hazardous materials/reagents.
- Other duties as assigned.
