Kitchen Assistant

Job description

Part Time / 10 Hours Per Week / Permanent

City Catering is a traded service within the council. We are committed to ensuring that school children and students are provided with a healthy balanced meal every lunchtime. Each kitchen is made of a dedicated team who work together to provide hot and cold meals and ensure that food has been served in a clean and safe environment. Join our welcoming and friendly service to assist in our busy school kitchens, and that all cleaning procedures are undertaken throughout the working day.

There are vacancies available in Coleman Primary, Rushey Mead Primary, and Rolleston Primary. The working hours will be discussed and agreed at interview.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll become part of a team that ensures that children/ students are provided with a healthy balanced meal following all dietary guidelines and food safety legislation. On a day to day basis you’ll liaise with either the Senior Dining Room Assistant in a dining centre or a Unit Catering Manager in a Production kitchen and work with them to meals. You’ll assist with all aspects of preparation and cooking of food and serving of a daily meal to school children and teaching staff. You’ll maintain a high standard of hygiene and cleanliness in the food preparation and service areas, paying attention to the health and safety regulations. Setting up dining room furniture is a daily required task and carry out general cleaning duties including washing dishes, whilst keeping all work areas clean and tidy.

What you’ll need

It doesn’t matter if you’ve never worked as a Kitchen Assistant before. What does matter to us the most, is taking pride in what you do and a willingness to learn. You’ll be reliable, punctual, diligent, and enthusiastic and be able to work with minimal supervision at times. Along with a willing attitude to promote and ensure the good reputation of the school and be a helpful member of the catering team. You’ll be approachable and personable, and happy to speak with staff and students, whilst proving great customer service to all those who come into contact with the catering team. You’ll work flexibly and share in workloads, particularly during periods of pressure and be able to carry out all duties to a very high standard.

Due to the nature of this role it is subject to an Enhanced DBS check.

What we can offer you

As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You’ll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We’ll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities. In addition, you can choose from a number of flexible benefits, discounts on city buses and trains. For an illustrative value of your benefits package, take a look at our benefits calculator.
