We are currently looking to recruit a Communications Officer, based in London. This role will be working in Press Office and Programmes Desk.
The successful candidate will work as part of a small, high impact team of Communications Officers working with newspapers, magazines and broadcasters as well as digital and social. You will be managing reputational issues, corporate announcements and finding news stories to secure proactive publicity.
This will be a rota based role with the requirement for some evening and weekend work, from home. Work carried out during normal office hours is mainly carried out in our office in London, W1.
Main ResponsibilitiesAs Communications Officer, you will:
- Act as the first point of call for journalists and handle routine press enquiries working across both corporate and programme areas according to business needs
- Generate ideas for proactive stories, develop them, prepare press materials and brief to journalists, securing coverage in support of BBC objectives
- Where appropriate to co-ordinate press conferences, briefings, previews and press management at BBC events, handling requests for interviews and giving authority for viewings to be arranged
- Prepare briefing materials on all aspects of BBC policy for senior executives and help maintain a core rolling brief of issues, including programme-related matters
- Establish a good knowledge of key media contacts in the national and regional newspapers and websites, TV and radio outlets
- Develop and create material for digital comms and incorporate this into publicity and communication campaigns
- Comply with the press office responsibilities under the BBCs Editorial Standards, including checking responses and releases issued to the media have the appropriate level of sign-off
- Provide any additional administrative support where necessary including media monitoring, managing the press office inbox and inputting programme information
- Provide required information and copy to high standards of accuracy and on time
- Where appropriate to work on opinion former events and stakeholder engagement to ensure that BBC messages reach the desired target audiences
- Play an active role in helping to achieve the strategic aims of the whole division by contributing ideas and working towards common goals
Ideally you will have experience of proactive and reactive media relations. Furthermore, you will have an understanding of social media and digital communications channels, how it operates and risk and benefits of engaging with it at the BBC.
You'll have effective interpersonal and communication skills, (verbal and written), including the ability to present clear and concise professional communications to a range of audiences. Experience of using a wide range of digital and social media.
