About the Team
The infrastructure team is an integral part of the IT Services department, responsible for the infrastructure that underpins our services, systems and platforms for both internal and customer use. It is a multi-disciplined team that works closely with the other IT Services teams and departments across the wider business.
About the Role
The Junior Database Administrator will assist both the Microsoft SQL and MySQL database administrators in the management and administration of Giacom’s database environments. You will help with the monitoring of the environments as well as assisting in the remediation of legacy SQL databases to remain in a supported version. You will help with troubleshooting and resolving database related issues and aid in keeping documentation up to date.
Role responsibilities:
Infrastructure, works on:
- Assist in providing technical support for escalated issues and tickets.
- Undertake cross and inter departmental projects of a highly specialised and technical nature.
- Installation and configuration of databases.
- Proactively make recommendations and resolve technical system issues to improve SQL stability and performance.
- Build and maintain support documentation.
Support:
- To provide support for infrastructure related tickets raised with the IT support desk.
- To work closely with the Support Team to ensure efficient, collaborative working in both project work and business as usual activities.
Network & Security:
- To work closely with the Network and Security Teams to ensure efficient, collaborative working in both project work and business as usual activities.
Development:
- Continually look for ways in which to improve the systems and services that the department provides.
- Work with vendor support to maintain positive relationships with key suppliers and ensure that infrastructure procurement is managed correctly.
- Work with knowledgebase and communications to ensure work instructions and processes are documented clearly and that all activities that may impact end users are communicated out effectively.
General:
- Participate in 1:1 meetings and annual performance reviews.
- Participate in training and continuing development to meet both your professional and the business needs.
- Participates in departmental, internal and external meetings as required.
- Participates in project and development work as required.
- Ensure you stay informed as to any technological improvements and developments in infrastructure, share these with the team and build them into future plans.
- Ensure industry standard best practise is adhered to wherever possible.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience:
Essential:
- Basic knowledge in SQL database management
- Fundamental experience of writing and optimising SQL statements
- Rudimentary knowledge of de-facto standards and best practices in SQL
- Basic troubleshooting skills
Desirable:
- Previous experience in a similar position
- Awareness of SQL Server high availability features including replication and log shipping
- Experience of MySQL, PostgreSQL, and MS SQL
- Familiarity with Linux
