Applications are invited to apply for a Junior Clinical Fellow in Emergency medicine at MKUH.
We have variety of Fixed Term post end dates in 31stJanuary 2024 and 6thAugust 2024.
The Trust requires the successful candidate to have and maintain full registration with a licence to practise with the General Medical Council and to fulfil the duties and responsibilities of a doctor as set down by the General Medical Council.
The department is open 24 hours a day and the workload is not always predictable but is considered varied and interesting. On-floor Consultant supervision is present on an average for sixteen hours per day, seven days per week with Middle Grade supervision for the remaining hours.
The hours worked each week will vary. A twelve-week rota is in place which allows time off during the week. All leave entitlement must be taken by doctors during their stay. The leave cannot be paid at the end of the post or transferred to another post in the Trust.
Applicants who are unable, for personal reasons, to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post. Job share applicants are also welcomed. If appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with consultant colleagues.
Successful applicants will have both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as part of their job plans.
We are moving towards a seven-day working pattern and welcome applications from people of all ages including people over 65.
Your duties include initial diagnosis, resuscitation and overall clinical management of all patients arriving at ED. Appropriate follow-up, admission, transfer or discharge to GP care is an important part of the work along with the liaison with colleagues in the community i.e. GPs, Health Visitors, and District Nurses, for the proper continuity of care. There is an ED-based integrated Front Door Team consisting of community and hospital therapists, nurses and social workers which provides a direct-referral admission-avoidance service at MK ED.
Second opinion for admission or further management along with on-the-spot teaching is available from the on-call firms from various specialties within the hospital. Most of the junior and middle grade on-call clinicians are based on site.
Clinical audit is well established in ED and you will be expected to take an active role in the process and will be supported to present a project. The Clinical Audit department is very happy to provide relevant support.
Our hospital is a medium sized district hospital that provides a full range of acute hospital services and an increasing number of specialist services to the growing population of Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas. With around 550 beds and employing more than 4,000 staff, the hospital sees and treats appropriately 400,000 patients each year comprising of both outpatient and emergency attendances.
We have a busy A&E department that manages all medical, surgical and child health emergencies seeing over 90,000 patients a year. The department is a Trauma Unit within the Thames Valley Trauma Network and deals with the full range of emergencies. As our local population grows (current catchment is 300,000), we continue to develop our facilities. In addition to providing general acute services, Milton Keynes University Hospital increasingly provides more specialist services such as cancer care and complex cardiology.
All inpatient services and most outpatient services are provided on the main hospital site. Over the last 10 years, the Trust has invested significantly in its site and has developed a number of new services and pathways to improve outcomes for patients, as well as the experience they receive whilst in our care. A number of further developments are planned for the coming years as the health demands of the local population change.
The Junior Clinical Fellow, (JCF) in conjunction with the ED Consultants, Middle grade doctors and Nurses, would be expected to manage the wide variety of acute adult and paediatric emergencies presenting to the department. These are non-training posts, but the post holder would be expected to attend weekly junior doctor teaching in addition to the valuable training and experience that would be gained clinically.
These posts would be ideal for doctors who have completed their Foundation programme training. They would be expected to provide teaching/training for medical students and doctors on clinical attachments. The department is fast growing and is a research active department with ongoing CRASH3 trial and Upcoming RAMPP, I-PED trials, there is an opportunity to get involved with teaching simulation- including a bimonthly teaching for the SHO’s and Middle grades including multi-disciplinary teaching with other specialties. Those of you who are interested in doing prehospital EM, will have an opportunity to get involved with prehospital shifts (ECRU) in liaison with Oxford prehospital team. Other educational opportunities may also be available to those JCTFs who are keen to avail themselves of additional development. You would also be encouraged and supported to do your life support courses.
