Job description

We are seeking to appoint a Junior Animal Technician to work in the School’s animal facility. Working under supervision, the post holder will be involved in the general husbandry of animals including feeding, watering and carrying out routine procedures to ensure the hygiene of animal accommodation as well as the general upkeep of the facility.

This is a physically demanding role with some repetitive moving as well as lifting, carrying and manual dexterity. Other duties include:

  • Delivering environmental enrichment to the animals
  • Handling animals and assisting with procedures
  • Maintaining accurate records

Full training will be given including sponsored day release for Institute of Animal Technology (IAT) qualifications.

The successful applicant must have a proven interest in working with animals, GCSE or equivalent in Maths English and Science, experience in following instructions accurately, ability to work as a member of a team, ability to complete work tasks to deadlines and to a specified standard. The successful applicant will be expected to participate in weekend/public holidays rota system when trained. Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment and a security check.

The post is full-time and funded by the Biological Services Facility for a period of 12 months and is available immediately. Salary is on the Professional Support Grade 3 scale in the range £28,053 - £31,519 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting). The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Wellbeing Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
