Job description
We are modernising BBC News to serve all audiences better.
Our plans will enable us to be a more diverse, inclusive and agile organisation that responds quickly to changing audience needs, provides you with exceptional career opportunities, and strengthens our position as a trusted, impartial, world leading news organisation.
Our plans also support the BBC’s objective to grow the value we deliver to audiences and transform our presence across the UK.
We are looking for creative journalists to join our new and growing Live team – one of the three core teams in our Digital department. Your main duty will be to write and produce content for live pages – also known as live blogs – on the BBC News website and app. You will work closely alongside other teams in digital and within our wider news operation to offer the best live experience in text, video, images and graphics.
Main ResponsibilitiesWhen big news breaks, people around the world come to live pages on the BBC news website and app in their millions. And our goal is simple: bring audiences to the heart of unfolding stories. We are looking for enthusiastic and driven journalists to join our new and ambitious team at the centre of the BBC newsroom. Journalists on the Live team will get a thrill from covering fast-paced, breaking news from the UK and around the world. They will write in a clear and captivating way and use photographs, graphics and videos to bring stories to life. They will need to be able to remain calm under pressure and to work collaboratively with others.
But we aren’t just looking for breaking news obsessives, we also want reporters who will come up with creative live treatments and story ideas, chase leads and pursue original interviews. We need people who use social media to find perspectives others have overlooked and who can spot stories bubbling up before they break in a big way. Journalists on Live will also use data analytics to make sure our journalism is accessible and reaching as wide an audience as possible. And they will get the chance to shape our coverage, contribute editorial ideas and plan live reporting of major events - from general elections to Eurovision.
Are you the right candidate? The ideal candidate should have:
- Experience writing live breaking news updates and stories for digital news websites in English
- A proven capacity to generate ideas, chase leads and work collaboratively on stories at pace
- A track record of covering the UK and/or international news agenda with attention to accuracy, context and tone
- A history of using search and audience data to improve storytelling, serve user needs and broaden coverage
- Eagerness to deliver high quality video that brings audiences closer to the story
- An awareness of the distinctive nature and requirements of live digital coverage
