Job description
Overview
We are looking for a hard-working and creative writer to join our team of energy writers, who will write news and features for our power, mining and offshore websites and magazines. The candidate must have an interest in these topics, be comfortable pitching original feature ideas regularly, and eager to work closely with members of a small team to ensure news, features and analysis are published across our platforms regularly.
Key responsibilities
The candidate’s primary responsibility will be writing news and features for one of our three energy sites, either power or mining. While they will sometimes be asked to cover particularly significant news or events on the other sites, they will be expected to specialise in one industry, writing daily news pieces on the biggest events in the sector, and one feature a week on topics of interest to them.
The features take a range of forms, including long-forms with interview-led analysis, shorter pieces analysing data from our parent company GlobalData, and Q&A sessions with industry leaders. The candidate will demonstrate an ability to write in a range of these formats, and the capacity to learn about new formats and article types, as we aim to provide a range of articles for our readers.
The candidate will also demonstrate a capacity for pitching new ideas for features, and so a creative mind is a necessity for this position. With around three magazines going out each month for the duration of the year, being able to write on a range of topics, and in a range of formats, is a must to ensure our magazines and websites remain unique and our articles are never repetitive.
Skill with social media would be a positive, as writers are expected to promote their own articles via the company’s Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook channels, and the ability to make simple graphs and charts would be of use for more data-driven pieces, although both of these skills can be learned on the job.
The candidate
The candidate themselves will be a primarily creative individual with the capacity to learn new skills and new manners of working to effectively cover developments in a series of rapidly-changing industries. Writing ability is similarly integral to the position, as producing well-written, engaging copy is the primary responsibility of this position.
Personal responsibility and time-management skills are also necessary, as covering news in any sector requires an ability to write content and commentary as quickly as the news itself moves.
This is particularly relevant in the energy industries, where topics such as the current energy crisis, impacts of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on global energy infrastructure, and environmental challenges arising in industry are topics that are both of great importance, and prone to rapid change. As this position is entirely remote, being able to manage one’s own time is of particular importance, as deadlines in this sector can be tight, and the candidate will largely be responsible for hitting their own deadlines.
The candidate will also be required to work in a small team, and work with teammates to collectively cover big events in the energy industries, such as government summits and industry events. The ability to work with teammates, either in going to events together and writing pieces from events, or taking different angles on covering the same major news story, is important in this role.
