The Highlands and Islands is the largest news patch in the country – and one of the most diverse. The BBC is looking for an experienced Journalist to work in Inverness covering this region to further broaden the range of stories we tell from this part of Scotland. We are looking for a journalist with engaging, original ideas and who is comfortable working to tight deadlines.
Main ResponsibilitiesYou will work across platforms creating content for our digital output, reading and writing radio news bulletins, as well as reporting for radio and TV. You will develop original journalism with your contacts in the community and report on issues that matter to our audience. You will have the knowledge of the Highlands and Islands, its institutions and news agenda and the experience to make informed editorial decisions. You will have the skills and passion to help expand our local news across radio and TV and develop our services for digital audiences.
You will be able to tailor your storytelling style for a range of BBC Scotland programming, regularly producing and presenting bulletins for local radio news as well as reports for national bulletins and radio programmes Good Morning Scotland, Lunchtime Live and Drivetime. You will have a central role in broadcasting and developing our digital smart speaker voice news and further expanding our news services for digital audiences . You will also have the capacity to develop TV story telling skills to produce output and reports for our TV news programmes Reporting Scotland and the Nine. We’d like you to have plenty of ideas for how to differentiate coverage across these different outlets.
You will join a team working a shift pattern for our local radio output, developing our digital offer, and reporting for radio and TV. You will be expected to work alone and as part of a team.
You’ll be required to work a range of shifts: weekdays, weekends and early mornings.
Are you the right candidate?We are looking for someone with the experience and ability to develop original journalism, with radio and digital production skills. The successful candidate will have lots of story ideas, demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the Highlands and Islands institutions, local issues and its diverse range of communities as well as having a wide network of contacts in the area. You should have:
- experience as a journalist, with excellent writing skills and editorial judgement.
- experience in both digital and live broadcast platforms would be advantageous, including self-operation of radio studio desks and use of digital editing software
- knowledge of the Highlands and Islands and excellent local contacts
- demonstrable ability to work flexibly as part of a team
- experience of digital news production and clear ideas of implementing and developing these to attract new audiences in the Highlands and Islands.
- You will be able to demonstrate knowledge of Scots law and the law as it affects broadcasting and media.
