About the Role

The IT technician, reporting to the IT Manager, will undertake a wide range of first line support duties which support the day-to-day activities of the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences. The support provided by the IT Technician will include problem solving of routine technical issues, as well as AV support for the seminars and workshops that are hosted as part of the programmes of research at the Institute. The IT Technician responds to the needs of both Institute staff and visitors and is a vital member of the Institute team due the significant use of IT systems to deliver activities with a world-wide reach.

The Institute

The Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences is a national and international visitor research centre running programmes on selected themes, with applications in a very wide range of societal, scientific and technological areas. The Institute attracts leading scientists, both from the UK and from overseas, to interact on research over extended periods. The work of the IT Technician underpins the broad range of activities hosted by the Institute.

What you will need

Your previous experience of working in an IT-related customer focussed role will enable you to react flexibly to the IT needs of the Isaac Newton Institute and its staff and visitors. You will be proactive and enthusiastic, using your excellent written and verbal communication skills to respond effectively to varied requests for support from diverse people, with differing levels of IT skills, relating to a wide range of devices and operating systems. Your verbal communication skills will also be vital for learning delivery, such as staff inductions and deployment of new IT tool.

Your ability to manage and prioritise your own tasks is important as you will be required to undertake routine maintenance and installation tasks relating to IT infrastructure, following agreed operational procedures, alongside the customer focussed support tasks. Some of these tasks will require you to be sufficiently physically fit to move and carry IT equipment.

Video editing and AV skills are also relevant to this role, enabling you to assist with assembling video and audio footage into finished products to be published in the public domain.
