The Town of Essex is currently accepting resumes for the position of IT Technician – Full Time. Reporting to the Manager, IT, this position is responsible for providing technical assistance to computer users and resolving technical problems regarding computer hardware, software, printing installation, electronic mail, operating systems and telephone system.
IT Technician will be responsible for assisting with the maintenance of the Town’s network, hardware, software applications, telephone, peripherals and other computer equipment.

Position Roles and Responsibilities:
- Setting up workstations with computers and necessary peripheral devices
- Provide orientation and guidance to new users on how to operate equipment and on new software
- Troubleshoot technical issues regarding computer configurations, PC hardware, software, peripheral devices such as scanners, projectors, photocopiers and telephone systems, etc.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of a system of standards for hardware, networking and internet solutions
- Assist in the upgrade and installation of software on all desktops, notebooks, phones and tablets throughout the organization
- Assist in researching, developing, documenting, testing and implementation of new technologies including : hardware, software, applications and networking solutions
- Assist in completing cost analysis/for the implementation of new technologies including: hardware, software, applications and networking solutions for the IT Department and/or Town of Essex
- Assist the Manager, Information Technology with the implementation of new applications
- Develop and conduct software and computer use training sessions to small groups
- Provide technical assistant to all staff and Council, coordinate with internal departments to ensure IT needs are understood and being met in timely manner.
- Act as back up to Manager, Information Technology for monitoring network, systems backups and anti-virus
- Identify and prepare hardware for disposal when appropriate, ensuring hardware is stripped and secured before disposal
- Liaise with external 3rd party vendors and suppliers regarding coordinating work and/or projects
- Document, support, and maintain the Municipality’s computer hardware, software and peripheral inventory including needed records on various municipal systems
- Manage and prioritize incoming requests for IT support through internal work order system; provide timely commination and escalation of issues as required
- Maintain records of all repairs maintenance schedule
- Responsible for the administration, maintenance and updates to the Phone System
- Maintain up to date telephone directory of all staff by location
- Other duties as assigned

Skill and Qualification Requirements
- Minimum two (2) years of previous experience related to providing technology support
- Minimum completion of a two (2) year post-secondary diploma in computer studies or a related program
- Certification in specific areas such as Cisco CCNA certification or Microsoft MCSA, MCSE or A+ certification is an asset
- Demonstrable proficiency with various applications including Windows and Microsoft Office, and remote access technologies
- Experience with the following technologies is considered an asset: ActiveNetworks, Microsoft Dynamics, Laserfiche, ShoreTel VolP phone system, and VMware server
- Working knowledge of backup software and systems, including backup, restore and disaster recovery of Windows based systems
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, presentation and problem solving skills
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal
- Exceptionally self-motivated and directed
- Excellent time management and multi-tasking abilities
- Ability to enforce corporate policies and procedures internally in a tactful and diplomatic manner
- Must hold a valid Ontario driver’s license
This is a CUPE bargaining unit position. The probationary rate of pay for this position is $22.41 per hour worked for the first 90 calendar days. The intermediate rate of pay for this position is $25.96 for days 91-180. The full rate of pay for this position is $29.51. Further increases will be as per the collective agreement.
