Reporting to the Vice President Finance & Administration, the IT Specialist will be responsible for providing technical support, troubleshooting hardware and software issues, managing network infrastructure, and ensuring the overall smooth operation of our IT systems. The ideal candidate will have a solid background in computer science or information technology, combined with at least three years of practical experience in a similar role.
The IT Specialist will assist with various projects and support the Ottawa Tourism staff with IT-related inquiries.
Key Competencies
- Strong technical knowledge of computer hardware, software, operating systems, and networking protocols.
- Proficient in troubleshooting and problem-solving to resolve hardware, software, and network-related issues.
- Administer Microsoft 365 tenant, including SharePoint, user setup and maintenance.
- Familiarity with network administration and maintenance.
- Ability to install, configure, and maintain computer systems, servers, and peripheral devices, including VOIP-based telecommunications and cell phones.
- Understanding of security principles and ability to implement and monitor appropriate security measures.
- Knowledge of system and network monitoring tools.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating with cross-functional teams.
- Continuous learning mindset to stay updated with emerging technologies and industry trends.
- Documentation skills to maintain accurate records of IT assets, configurations, and procedures.
Primary Areas of Responsibility
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for hardware, software, and network-related issues.
- Install, configure, and maintain computer systems, servers, network equipment, and peripheral devices.
- Administer the organization’s Microsoft 365 tenant as well as other SaaS platforms.
- Monitor and maintain the organization's network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, and wireless access points.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify and implement IT solutions to enhance productivity and efficiency.
- Evaluate and recommend new technologies, software, and hardware to improve system performance and reliability.
- Ensure data security and privacy by implementing and monitoring appropriate security measures, including firewalls, antivirus software, and access controls.
- Manage and administer user accounts, permissions, and passwords.
- Perform and monitor regular system backups and ensure disaster recovery plans are in place.
- Document and maintain accurate records of IT assets, configurations, and procedures.
- Stay updated with emerging technologies and industry trends to enhance IT infrastructure and support services continuously.
Essential Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in computer science, information technology, or similar.
- 3 years of experience as an IT support specialist.
- Exceptional ability to provide technical support and resolve queries.
- In-depth knowledge of computer hardware, software, and networks.
- Ability to determine IT needs and train end-users.
- Proficiency in Microsoft 365 administration.
- Experience in documenting processes and monitoring performance metrics.
- Advanced knowledge of database maintenance and system security.
- Ability to keep up with technical innovation and trends in IT support.
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
