Job description
The Project Alexandria team at Microsoft Research Cambridge (UK) is seeking an intern to explore potential ethical issues regarding the application of foundation models to enterprise data. The current discourse on foundation models (which have been developed using publicly available web data) raises various questions about their responsible development, including in relation to consent for contribution, scope for tackling hallucinations, and social implications for the development of human skill and knowledge. In this internship, we will explore whether similar, and different, issues arise in the context of enterprise data. Additional questions may relate to the impact of foundation models on information flow within organizations, equitable representation of organization members, and organizational learning. Ways of exploring these questions may be via framework development, data analyses, and experiments.
Responsibilities
We are looking for a curious and analytical individual who is interested in exploring complex challenges in human-AI interaction, specifically relating to the application of foundation models to enterprise data.
If accepted for this internship, you will be collaborating with machine learning and social science researchers, designers, and engineers, to understand and explore the problem space. It is expected that the findings will be presented to Microsoft research and product development groups, in the form of an audiovisual presentation and/or white paper, which could potentially be developed into an academic publication.
Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who:
- Are enrolled in at least a Masters program (PhD preferred) at the time of the internship (Summer 2023), in Machine Learning, Natural Language Processing, Human-Computer Interaction, or another field studying the relationship between artificial intelligence, people, and/or society;
- Have demonstrated experience in thinking through complex issues related to FATE (Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics) and/or organizational data and knowledge, ideally via past publications and projects;
- Are interested in the application of foundation models;
- Can synthesize research literature and identify research questions and implications;
- Can conduct analysis and experiments using existing machine learning models, such as large language models;
- Enjoy collaboration and feedback;
- Are clear and articulate communicators;
- Are capable of conducting research independently.
Timing and location:
This is a 12-week internship. The starting date must be before the end of June 2023. The candidate should ideally be able to work in the Cambridge UK office for the duration of the internship, although other arrangements may be negotiable as long as the candidate stays in the UK.
