Internship - Bioinformatician

Internship - Bioinformatician Cambridge, East of England, England

University of Cambridge
Full Time Cambridge, East of England, England 10.42 GBP HOURLY Today
Job description

The internship will be conducted through the University of Cambridge Temporary Employment Service and will be based and managed within the Wellcome - MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute.

The Wellcome - MRC Cambridge Stem Cell Institute (CSCI) is an international centre of excellence for stem cell research and regenerative medicine. Scientists in the Institute collaborate to advance our knowledge of various stem cell types and to perform pioneering work in translational research areas, providing the foundation for new medical treatments (https://www.stemcells.cam.ac.uk/).

Applications are invited for a skilled and enthusiastic computational biologist/bioinformatician intern to join the CSCI's Core Bioinformatics Group over the Summer 2023 (July - September). The group applies and creates state-of-the-art computational methods for the understanding of the biological properties and biomedical potential of stem cells (https://www.corebioinf.stemcells.cam.ac.uk/publications). We process extensive collections of diverse samples generated by CSCI PIs or through collaboration with local and international groups. We contribute to exciting and challenging international projects to systematically disentangle gene-to-gene interactions in stem cells.

The internship is suitable for individuals with background in a relevant quantitative discipline (Computer Science, Bioinformatics/ Computational Biology, or Applied Statistics/ Mathematics). You will interact daily with other bioinformaticians and periodically with members of other research groups within the CSCI. You are expected to have excellent communication skills and enthusiasm for learning how to excel in a multidisciplinary environment.

You will use existing cutting-edge software and help devise new methods for analysing a variety of NGS datasets including single-cell and bulk RNAseq, ChIP-seq and methylation assays. Candidates with experience in processing imaging data are also encouraged to apply.

Candidates should be familiar with a UNIX/Linux environment. Proficiency with an imperative programming/scripting language (e.g. Perl/Python/Java/C++) and statistical data analysis environments (R, Matlab) would be a strong advantage. Demonstrated expertise in the analysis of very large datasets and in problem solving using data science (machine learning) approaches is desirable.

The intern will be involved in both standardised and customised analyses applied on multilayer genomics, transcriptomics and epigenomics data with the aim of understanding the dynamic changes in the underlying regulatory networks. Training in specialist computational tools will be provided; an important criterion is the interest in using and developing bioinformatics tools and pipelines to advance stem cell research.

Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be directed to: Head of Bioinformatics/Scientific Computing, Dr Irina Mohorianu, [email protected].

This internship is for 12 weeks, 20 hours per week paid at £10.42 per hour. You will receive full training and will be mentored by Dr Irina Mohorianu on daily basis.

The closing date is Sunday 2nd April 2023 with interviews taking place the second half of April 2023.

To apply for this internship, please send your most up to date CV and cover letter to [email protected] and [email protected]. Please also include details of 2 referees (email address and phone number must be included), one of which should be your most recent line manager/supervisor.
