Internal Communications Manager, Wholesale and Product - Hybrid Working - London or Birmingham or Bristol
Why this job matters
With the merger of two units (Global and Business) into one (Business) beginning in 2023 and a new Business Leadership team established in April 2023, our role in the BT Group internal communications team, supporting Business, has never been more important. Our mission is to help everyone understand the transformation we’re undertaking, what we’re doing and where we’re going; to create a community of colleague advocates working for one company with a shared vision and purpose. We work to clear principles that help shape the work we do, so we can play our part in making BT a brilliant place to work. It’s challenging, at times exhausting, but it’s also hugely rewarding and fun. And we’re in it together.
Although the Group internal communications team might support different parts of the business, we’re all working for one company and the work we do in internal communications reflects that.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll be responsible for a few big things:
- Providing strategic advice and communications counsel to leadership team(s), to build the engagement and advocacy needed to deliver our ongoing transformation in this area.
- Building strong and respectful relationships with your stakeholders – including senior leadership – providing spot-on advice on comms best practice, industry trends and BT-wide channel strategies to improve their understanding of the bigger comms picture.
- Working as part of the Business leadership team you support to design, gain support for and deliver the IC strategy, demonstrating the benefits for all employees and enabling leaders to create connections where people feel engaged and inspired to drive business success.
- Creating an annual IC plan for the part of Business that you support that ties back to the broader IC plan, working closely with the principal internal communications to make sure it all stacks up.
- Creating and delivering any bespoke comms activity where it drives the engagement agenda – including any strategic projects or function initiatives – making sure they’re on brand and support our IC principles.
- Owning the communications plan for some of the unit’s organisational design delivery, providing high level messaging, a communications framework and central resources that can be deployed by leaders.
- Taking a colleague/audience first approach to communication by knowing your audiences – their working environments, accessibility to channels, history of change, capacity for digesting comms, and champion their needs
And you’ll naturally do the smaller things too:
- Spotting the stories we need to share and knowing how to say ‘no’ to anything that doesn’t help improve understanding of the bigger picture and drive advocacy in our people and in our brand.
- Making sure that any content you create for your audiences looks, sounds and feels like BT (in a good way). You’ll work closely with other communications colleagues and HR partners to work out what and when communications need to be adapted for your audience and you’ll constantly look for new ways to improve what we do, share insight and any new ideas you’ve come across.
- Staying on the lookout to try new things and bring fresh ideas to the table in pursuit of raising the quality of our communications time and again. You’re not afraid to challenge when you disagree with something but you’re able to do so constructively.
- Measuring and analysing the effectiveness of the communication and engagement plan and drive for continuous improvement.
- Proactively sharing any brilliant work from the part of Business you support back into the Business IC team to share across BT.
- Supporting on campaigns and core elements of the Business-wide plan, shaping what we do across Business with your knowledge of what matters to your audiences.
- Helping deliver Business Live, our annual Business engagement event, making sure it’s fit for purpose for your audiences.
The skills you’ll need
- Inspiring communicator, with strong verbal and written communication skills – particularly for presentations and creation of plans and strategy.
- Strategic thinker, with the ability to ‘join the dots’ on the overall impact of change across the business.
- Top-notch strategic and planning abilities – able to manage multiple plans and adapt to changing priorities and timelines quickly and easily.
- Energetic, creative and collaborative partner, experienced in advising the best way to land messages, working across a wide range of channels and skilled in creating brilliant communications.
- Effective questioning and ability to challenge constructively. You’ll be able to get to the heart of a problem quickly and challenge existing assumptions to uncover the best solution.
- Ability to break down complicated, technical and corporate speak into interesting and engaging communications that showcase our commitment to treating colleagues like adults that we like.
- Ability to work independently on high profile sensitive projects and deliver on time and with excellent feedback.
- Campaign planning, using multiple channels and vehicles to reach the right people, at the right time, within budget.
- Influential and resilient, with excellent stakeholder management, at all levels, especially tricky ones (there might be a few…)
- Demonstrable understanding of BT and internal communications – we’re a specialist team so we need someone experienced and in the know
- You’ll know what it’s like to deliver brilliant communications to a large audience, working closely with your network in internal communications and the wider business to make sure that what you do lands as well as possible.
- You’ll be a firm advocate for BT and the things we deliver for our employees, sharing best practice with the wider internal communications team, proactively providing ideas, protecting and promoting our brand and inspiring others.
