Job description

Intern, SEDF (London). London. Posting Date: 03/22/2023. Deadline: 04/09/2023
Do you want to help make the world a better place? The Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF) is seeking a 6-month full-time intern with a passion for economic development to support its capital deployment activities and participate in all aspects of the investment process.
The Open Society Foundations work to build vibrant and inclusive democracies whose governments are accountable and open to the participation of all people. We are active in more than 120 countries, making us the world’s largest private funder of independent groups working for justice, democratic governance, and human rights.
SEDF is the impact investing arm of the Foundations. We deploy direct and indirect Program-Related Investments (PRIs), including debt, equity, fund, guarantees, and recoverable grants into companies advancing OSF’s regional and global strategies. SEDF presently manages a portfolio of some 40 investments in 18 countries representing $406 million of committed capital. Our average investment size is $8 million, with the largest single commitment being $100 million and the smallest being $1 million. SEDF’s investments are co-developed and designed with, and made on behalf of, OSF’s programmatic entities, which comprise six regional programs, a global program, and the executive office.
Typical duties and responsibilities include:
  • Work on assigned transactions across all stages of the investment process, from concept note through to final investment, asset monitoring and exit.
  • Collect data from potential investees reports and audited financial statements, prepare financial analysis and models, and work on investment reports/proposals.
  • Coordinate with portfolio investees on performance against targets, tracking financial ratios and compliance with covenants.
  • Collaborate with partners inside and outside OSF.
  • Manage internal communication flow on transaction closing and assisting with social and financial monitoring of the investment assets.
  • Research special projects and keep up-to-date on trends, debates, and innovations in fields relevant to OSF's investment strategy, while developing emerging areas of expertise.
Candidate Profile
  • Educational background with financial, economics or a business focus.
  • Sound experience in financial modelling and analysis, investment management, commercial or investment banking, project and deal-oriented financial analysis; strong diplomatic and relationship management skills.
  • Financial modelling background: strong competency with evaluation, modelling for both debt and equity investments.
  • Investment background and experience working in complex and uncertain environments.
  • Understanding of, and passion for, economic development; especially engagement at the intersection of investing and economic development, as well as in the other themes prominent in the mission and work of the Open Society Foundations.
  • Results and Impact-orientation: candidates must demonstrate ability to maintain focus on achieving meaningful and measurable impact and results and be able to prioritize effectively towards desired outcomes in highly complex and uncertain environments.
If this sounds like the position you have been looking for, please submit your cover letter and CV; we look forward to learning more about you.
The intended period of performance for this internship is May to November 2023.
Please note, this position is not eligible for work authorization sponsorship.
Competitive rates of pay apply.
