Purpose of Job


The Intern, Climate Adaptation and Nature Finance (I-CANF), supports the implementation of the strategy of the EBRD in the area of climate resilience/adaptation and nature finance. She/he takes an active part in the execution of all related deliverables and supports the Climate Adaptation and Nature Finance team. The I-CANF supports CSD delivery in this important area of work in relation to policy dialogue and capacity building activities, as well as business delivery.


Under the guidance of the Associate Director, Lead Climate Adaptation and Nature Finance, the I-CANF works with other CSD experts to support sector teams in Banking to scale-up adaption and nature finance and to enhance these objectives in projects and clients’ operations, including the alignment of EBRD financing operations with the adaptation goals of the Paris Agreement. The I-CANF works closely with other CSD units and Bank teams including ESD and Risk on: (1) methodologies, tools and other activities for screening and assessing physical climate risks at the project/client level and enhancing the capacity of clients to assess and manage such risks; (2) the attribution and tracking of adaptation finance in EBRD financing operations; (3) the estimation and reporting of project-level climate resilience results and outcomes. In addition, the I-CANF supports the AD Lead Climate Adaptation and Nature Finance in interactions with external partners and initiatives.


Accountabilities and Responsibilities


  • Support the climate adaptation and nature finance team in preparing materials for internal capacity building, knowledge sharing, project proposals, case studies, and public events on topics relating to climate adaptation and nature finance.
  • Deliver research and analysis to support the CANF team’s strategic objectives across business development and policy dialogue, including background notes for engagement with external stakeholders and events.
  • Prepare briefings on relevant major political events, conferences, and publications.
  • Provide technical and analytical inputs to support the implementation of the strategy of the EBRD in the area of climate resilience/adaptation and nature.
  • In the area of climate resilience and adaptation, support project teams in Banking with the review and assessment of EBRD projects across all economic sectors:
    • to assess projects for exposure to physical climate risks that may need to be addressed during the project cycle;
    • to identify and attribute adaptation/resilience finance;
    • to determine alignment with the goals of the Paris Agreement.
  • Work alongside colleagues in CSD, Environmental and Sustainability Department and Risk Management on the application of tools and approaches to identify, assess and manage physical climate and nature-related risks at the project/client level, across EBRD investment operations and policy activities.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Qualifications


Main qualifications, experience and skills

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a relevant University degree (Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD) in climate science, engineering, economics, risk management, energy, ecology, environmental science or related area.
  • Excellent computer literacy, with understanding of data management and processing.
  • Familiarity with geospatial data and GIS programmes (e.g. ArcGIS) preferred.
  • Experience or training in supporting climate/green investments with knowledge of adaptation and/or nature and biodiversity finance approaches and methodologies.
  • Familiarity with climate change models and the approaches, methodologies, tools to assess physical climate risks and the implications of climate change in terms of economic and social impacts, and/or models for valuing ecosystem services.
  • Understanding of policy analysis and policy formulation in the areas of climate change, climate resilience, infrastructure development, and/or natural capital.
  • Understanding of business and finance principles.
  • Knowledge of emerging markets and developing countries would be advantageous.

Competences

  • Excellent written/oral communication skills in English and preferably in another language of the Bank (French, Russian or Arabic).
  • Ability to operate consistently within business guidelines and ethics and work sensitively in multicultural environments, building effective working relations with clients and colleagues.
  • Result-oriented, self-motivated, ability to work to and meet tight deadlines and to plan and organise work unsupervised in a logical and efficient manner.
  • Familiarity with role and requirements of EBRD and/or other international financing institutions and/or development agencies.
