Job Description:

Primary responsibilities are for an after-school boatbuilding and mentoring program for teens; co-facilitate a job-skills training program for youth (ages 17-22); and serve as lead instructor for one or more introductory boat building/manual arts projects conducted in schools for youth (grades 5-9). Additionally, the Program Instructor will co-facilitate AHB’s summer day camps and on-the-water programs using AHB’s fleet of boats.

An exceptional candidate for this position will have that unique combination of woodworking or wooden boatbuilding experience AND be able to relate well with diverse populations of youths. Ability and a commitment to teaching and mentoring youth from a spectrum of backgrounds is essential to this position.

Duties include:

  • Instruct and lead RAFT, the after-school boatbuilding and mentoring program for 10-15 students, ages 13-17, per 8-week sessions, over the fall, winter, and spring; Each session block is two-and-a-half hours for two-three afternoons per week, running from 4:00-7:00 pm.;
  • Assist with the job-skills training program for youth, ages 16-22, and advanced repair/restoration of boats.
  • Manage two-four shop assistants, ages 17-22;
  • Develop boat-based curriculum and activities, working together with the youth programs director;
  • Assist with on-the-water programs using AHB’s fleet of boats;
  • Assist with ongoing shop maintenance and upkeep (everyone’s responsibility);
  • Support program logistics and administration, reporting requirements, and special events as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Woodworking experience — preferably in wooden boatbuilding. However, it is not necessary that the applicant be an expert boat builder, but proficiency with tools and their uses is required
  • Ability to evaluate, design, and generate project-based curriculum, assessments, and/or teaching methodologies, especially in non-traditional settings
  • Excellent organization and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and have own transportation
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • A patient and calm demeanor, combined with a flexible and positive mindset
  • Ability to work collaboratively and positively as a team member with staff and volunteers
  • Experience rowing, paddling, or sailing and managing small crafts a plus
  • Spanish language skills a plus.
