Job description

Imperial College’s Learning and Teaching Strategy, launched in June 2017, set out an ambitious programme of work aimed at establishing Imperial as a global leader in innovative, evidence-based education. This has been underpinned by significant investment to enhance teaching and learning methods across the College and to extend our education more widely.

We are looking for a new member to join the Ed Tech Team in the Faculty of Natural Sciences - someone with proven expertise in using core learning technologies such as VLEs and lecture capture to support student learning. Previous experience in supporting/building online progammes and working in a STEM would be of interest but is not essential.

You will use your ed tech background, skills, experience and passion to support the design and delivery of modules and programmes in the Faculty of Natural Sciences, both on campus and online. You will work in collaboration with academic, teaching and other support staff to plan, produce and evaluate high-quality learning content, learning activities and assessments that enhance learning and promote an excellent student experience.

Duties and responsibilities

You will use your knowledge, skills and experience to support the delivery of an excellent education for our students and will have the opportunity to work across different functional areas in the EdTech Team, developing and extending your experience:

  • applying learning design and pedagogical frameworks in modules and programmes delivered in line with learning outcomes.
  • delivering design briefings, guidance, demonstrations and workshops for Academic Staff and Teaching Fellows.
  • creating digital STEM-specific content and assessments using the established VLE, external platforms and ancillary technologies, collaboratively working with EdTech suppliers and academic staff.
  • developing technical integrations with online platforms, interfacing/data exchange to provide enhanced functionality and/or reporting and ensure seamless integration of tools.
  • providing learning technology support, investigating and resolving technical issues and suggesting the use of appropriate solutions to deliver tailored learning, teaching and assessment activities.
  • providing bespoke training and guidance to staff in the Faculty in face-to-face/online sessions and documentation.
  • working collaboratively to evaluate learning, teaching and assessment methods and extract actionable insights from evaluation data, including student feedback and engagement data, to evolve practice.

Essential requirements



  • A degree or equivalent qualification, ideally in a STEM discipline, with educational experience/knowledge; or equivalent professional experience and knowledge in learning technology, online learning or pedagogy.

  • A proven track record of supporting teaching, learning and assessment with technology, ideally in a University environment.

  • Experience of working content in at least two of the following areas, ideally in a STEM discipline:

    • Learning design

    • Production of assets (e.g. interactivities, video, web applications)

    • Development of tools or applications

    • Learning technologies (e.g. VLEs/online learning platforms, lecture recording systems, online assessment/marking systems, specialist teaching tools for specific skills such as mathematics, statistics, programming)

    • to support the development of teaching, learning and assessment materials, experiences and processes.

    • Specialist knowledge of sound pedagogy-based teaching and assessment methods and techniques, ideally in STEM disciplines, in higher education.

  • Excellent communication (oral and written), interpersonal and presentation skills.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.

  • Excellent time management skills with the ability to multi-task and prioritise own work.

  • Excellent skills in the use of a number of technologies relating to teaching, learning and assessment. These may include, for example, Microsoft Office 365 products (including the Microsoft Power Platform), Front end web development, Wireframe tools, Scripting languages, Mentimeter, Wordpress, Articulate, Camtasia, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, LaTeX, Mobius, MATLAB, GitHub, Jupyter Notebooks, Azure Labs, Visual Studio, Docker. We do not expect candidates to have experience in all of these!

The College is currently trialling a Work Location Framework until early 2023. Hybrid working may be considered for this role and the role holder may be expected to work 60% or more of their time onsite, with 40% the minimum time spent onsite.
