- HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT PROFESSIONAL (MEDICAL INFORMATION ANALYST)
CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA
The Safe Medical Care Research (SMC Research) department performs acquisition, abstraction, and capture of clinically oriented medical legal data. The department analyses and interprets the data to generate knowledge that supports the activities and knowledge translation of the Safe Medical Care Learning department. The SMC Research department also responds to internal and external requests for data analysis. The department studies historical data to identify individual provider, team and system factors associated with medical-legal risk, researches trends, and evaluates the performance and impact of education programs. The department synthesizes evidence and disseminates its research findings by authoring reports, risk management and educational materials in collaboration with CMPA’s physician advisors, general legal counsel, and the Communications department.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Medical Information Analyst (MIA) conducts research and analysis on volumes of medical information for risk identification and educational purposes. The MIA focuses on medical legal files where no patient safety event occurred. The MIA provides an assessment of the information, synthesizes the content, and prepares the information for the development of risk management materials, educational programming and publications, and for future use at the CMPA.
POSITION ACTIVITIES
Review content of medical case files, with particular focus on the identification of factors which negatively affected the physician and patient relationship as well as any individual or system factors that may have contributed to the event- Synthesize all relevant components of the case, by composing a concise, complete and accurate summary for each patient or party, and relevant medico-legal matter
- Identify from the medical file, the diagnoses, interventions, contributing factors and all other pertinent information.
- Comprehend and master medical classification systems including the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), the Canadian Classification of Diagnostic, Therapeutic and Surgical Procedures (CCI), and customized CMPA classifications
- Master and integrate complex electronic coding tools (3M Encoder and FOLIO). Identify relevant presenting condition, intervention, contributing factors and other appropriate internal CMPA codes
- Review specific data elements entered into PeopleSoft by other departments for quality assurance purposes
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor, Diploma or Certificate program (2-3 years) in a health related field- Health Records or Health Information Management (HIM) designation or certificate or related experience.
- 4-6 years related medical office or hospital experience including coding experience in both hospital inpatient and outpatient setting.
- Experience using ICD-10-CA/CCI and ICD-9/CCP codes and products.
- Knowledge of MS Office Suite (Outlook, Excel and PowerPoint)
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Proficiency in English is mandatory
- Ability to comprehend written French is preferred
- Strong organizational skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to think analytically with a high attention to detail
POSTING DETAILS
Job Type: Permanent full-time opportunity- Salary range: $68,000 - $91,000 – this role is classified as level 7

- Location: Fully Remote Job, working from a home-based office anywhere in the provinces of Ontario and Québec.
