Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Environment, Health & Safety Division has an opening for an Industrial Hygienist to join the team.


In this role, you will provide leadership for customer service-oriented, technical safety and industrial hygiene consultation while providing expert support to customers in anticipating, recognizing, evaluating, and controlling diverse chemical, physical, biological, and general safety hazards.


What You Will Do:

  • Serves as Subject Matter Expert (SME) and overall institutional “Owner” of the Exposure Assessment Program:
    • Develops, designs, and implements strategies to ensure chemical specific assessments are conducted and that compliance requirements are met.
    • Provides technical direction and leadership in the development of industrial hygiene and safety procedures and provides guidance to H&S Department staff.
    • Develops, reviews, and implements exposure assessment plans for customer divisions, including conducting exposure assessments and the related data entry and report writing.
    • Applies knowledge of research and support operations, reviews work tasks to support completion of baseline hazard assessments by H&S Department staff members.
    • Independently identifies program deficiencies, designs and implements solutions to complex problems.
  • Serves as Subject Matter Expert (SME) and overall institutional “Owner” for the industrial hygiene module of the Comprehensive Health Environment and Safety System (CHESS) program, LBNL’s industrial hygiene data management and reporting system:
    • Responds to inquiries from internal and external customers
    • Provides interpretation, periodic review, and program updates.
  • Develops and administers assurance plans for assigned program areas:
    • Establishes technical assurance criteria including conformance with ES&H Manual requirements.
    • Implements surveys, reviews or audits as required to fulfill requirements of the plan.
    • Identifies and implements items for continuous improvement and develops appropriate corrective actions and ensures timely close out.
    • Reports results of assurance assessments to subject divisions and EH&S Division management.
  • Provides consultation, technical guidance, and problem-solving on a variety of health and safety related issues to assigned scientific customer divisions. This includes the following:
    • Manages and leads, as requested, EHS multi-disciplinary teams in support of the assigned customer division(s)’ Integrated Safety Management (ISM) Program/Plans, Work Planning and Control activities, safety inspections, self-assessments, and assists in accident investigations.
    • Applies unique understanding of customer division(s)’ needs, mission(s), organization, work hazards, and ES&H issues as well as ES&H programs/services to advise customer Division(s) of needed corrective action and improved safety performance.
    • Conducts laboratory and other technical area (e.g., shop area) evaluations in support of health and safety programs, such as, but not limited to, Chemical Hygiene and Safety, Machine Guarding, Fire, and Electrical Safety Programs.
  • Provides essential support services during localized or sitewide emergencies, including those that relate directly to the health, safety, and welfare of the Lab, ensure continuity of key operations, and maintain and protect Lab properties, including issues related to lab shut-downs and restarts.
  • Contributes to the completion and submission of the DOE-required Performance Indicators.
  • Represents the Berkeley Lab in interactions with DOE, regulators, peers at other facilities, clients, and management.

What is Required:

  • BS in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, or close equivalent discipline and at least 7 years of experience in Occupational Safety or Industrial Hygiene, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in relevant EHS fields.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, maintain and monitor Industrial Hygiene programs and initiatives, including development and execution of training, writing procedures, and conducting inspections and exposure assessments in laboratory and other technical areas.
  • Broad knowledge and proven ability to apply safety and industrial hygiene principles, theories and concepts to provide creative solutions to complex problems and develop mechanisms for measuring results.
  • Broad knowledge and work experience in the detection and control of hazards involved with complex technologies in a research environment.
  • Expert knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, and other pertinent federal, state, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency with standard business software and cloud-based tools, including word processing, presentation software, and spreadsheets.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Safety, or close equivalent discipline with at least 3 years of experience or Master’s Degree and at least 5 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in relevant EHS fields.
  • Experience working in a DOE environment.
  • Demonstrated ability and success in negotiating and dealing with various regulatory organizations and exhibiting sensitivity when dealing with community issues.
  • Experience with using control banding as an exposure assessment and control strategy.
  • Experience in applying statistics to exposure data to inform decision-making.
  • Professional certification, registration, or equivalent.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is expected to pay $147,480.00 - $163,872.00 annually, which fits within the full salary range of $131,088.00 - $221,196.00 for the H60.4 - Industrial Hygienist 4 position. Salary for this position will commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
  • This position will be hired at a level commensurate with the business needs and the skills, knowledge, and abilities of the successful candidate.

  • This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
