Overview of the role
UK Biobank are delighted to be recruiting for a HSE Officer based at our modern offices in Cheadle. Working alongside the Head of Health Safety and Environment to assist with the management and coordination of health, safety and environmental sustainability across UK Biobank sites. This role would suit somebody in the early stage of their career and looking to make an impact, with opportunities for growth and development.
Working hours are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday. 9am to 5pm.
Key Responsibilities
- Positively contribute to the development of UK Biobank as a world-leading scientific resource, working with teams across the organisation.
- Assist the Head of Health, Safety and Environment to deliver on the current Health and Safety strategy and in developing a new Environmental strategy.
- Assist the Head of Health, Safety and Environment with the maintenance, review and ongoing development of management systems.
- Identify and assess opportunities to reduce costs and improve efficiencies in our operations.
- Support management teams with creation and review of risk assessments and integration of significant findings into standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Support the development of internal communications and awareness campaigns as we move to a proactive and interdependent culture.
- Assist in the development and update of intranet-based guidance and resources for employees, particularly on the subjects of Environmental management and sustainability.
- Maintain training records, including administration of an eLearning platform; book and schedule training courses and assist with the creation of training materials.
- Administer the incident management system, triage reports and investigate accidents and incidents.
- Support management teams to carry out workplace inspections and routine checks.
- Support the Head of Health, Safety and Environment in development and delivery of an audit programme.
- Monitor key performance indicators and assist with the creation of regular performance reports.
- Support the Health and Safety committee and reporting to the Executive Management Team and Trustee Board.
- Work closely with the Estates and Technical Services team to support maintenance of firefighting equipment, fire safety systems and water systems.
- Work closely with the Human Resources team to promote staff health and wellbeing.
About you
Essential
- Demonstrable experience in a Health, Safety and Environment role, or another related field.
- NEBOSH General Certificate, or equivalent such as NCRQ / NVQ.
- IEMA Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management, or equivalent.
- Have good organisational skills and be self-motivated.
- Able to work proactively to solve problems and manage time effectively.
- Able to work effectively in a team and to complete agreed tasks with a minimum of supervision.
- Strong communicator; able to communicate to all levels in the organisation.
- Able to write reports and procedures.
- Experienced of completing workplace inspections and audits.
- IT literate; use of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word etc.) and use of simple databases.
- Willing and able to travel to clinic locations in the UK on a regular basis.
Desirable
- Experience of supporting scientific / research facilities, ideally in the healthcare sector or life sciences.
- Experience of working in either a laboratory or healthcare environment.
- Experience of working with estates and facilities teams.
- Membership of professional bodies such as IOSH, IEMA or IIRSM.
