Your new role
National Highways are currently recruiting for 1 permanent and 1 fixed term (9 months) experienced HR Managers to join our Employee Relations (ER) team within HR in Birmingham. Within this role, you will be supporting managers with high risk ER matters, providing advice, guidance and solutions to difficult situations and complex employee relations cases, including ACAS conciliations and Employment Tribunals. You will ensure that National Highways are legally protected and comply with National Highways policies and procedures. You will also be working with Senior HRBPs to lead on embedding ER initiatives and enable people managers to take ownership of all people and ER activities.
There will also be the opportunity for projects and HR policy review.
What you'll be leading on
- Leading on a variety of escalated ER cases and issues, using your knowledge in ER and employment law.
- Act as ER lead in the review and delivery of ER policies, materials and guidance to support the delivery of ER services. Lead and support the design of Learning and development material as the subject matter experts in all ER related advice.
- Managing multiple complex ER cases, using and updating the case management system effectively, from receipt of a case through to its conclusion.
- Work collaboratively with people managers, broadening their capability by supporting ER cases to ensure consistent application of HR policies are processed across the business.
- Deliver a high quality, customer and business focused and professional advice on all ER matters including reasonable adjustments, disciplinary, grievance, performance, attendance, flexible working and partial retirement cases, ACAS and Employment Tribunal claims and ER concerns.
- Take an active role in the delivery of the ER Strategy and plan throughout the business, acting as ER lead in assigned workstreams.
- Proactively represent ER and support Senior HRBP’s within directorates acting as role models for the organisational values and behaviours.
- Working collaboratively with Senior HRBP’s by coaching and mentoring people managers, helping them understand how best to deliver ER s services to all employees.
- Apply a risk based approach to case management, utilising sound judgement, skills and knowledge to intervene where required to conclude cases effectively and quickly. Working closely with HRBP’s and internal Employment lawyer to seek legal advice where necessary.
- Directly support in the implementation of new policies and processes and towards effective working relationships with Trade Unions.
- Lead on Employment Tribunal cases, contributing towards submissions and actively managing cases to deadlines to ensure that National Highways is protected.
To be successful
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in HR, business administration, or a related field, or commensurate professional experience (Desirable)
- Qualified up to Level 7 CIPD (Desirable)
- A good understanding of employment law legislation
- Excellent stakeholder management skills
- Knowledge of governance guidelines, compliance and regulatory requirements
- Excellent communication, advisory and coaching skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with people managers and employees within the business
- Specialist experience in applying knowledge and supporting managers in complex cases in end-to-end core HR and ER experience
