Job description

The successful candidate will be part of the HR Advice team who provide advice, guidance and assistance on HR policies, procedures, and legislation across the HR lifecycle. The aim of the team is to develop strong employee engagement through good management practices.

HR Advisers need to have a strong understanding of the business areas they support to ensure they can provide robust advice to managers on the options available and articulate the risks and benefits for these different options. The post-holder will be responsible for case work and co-ordinating employee relations issues, as well as supporting some recruitment activities.

Through data analytics the post-holder will monitor activity and trends across the portfolio of responsibility with the intention of prevention or early intervention and recommend solutions for people and cultural issues.

The Person

You will have existing experience across the HR lifecycle, with a particular strength and experience in advising on policies and procedures, and managing employee relations case work such as disciplinaries, grievances, sickness absence and performance management. You will be able to demonstrate experience of successfully managing casework from informal stages and investigations through to hearing.

You will need a sound working knowledge of employment law with the professional credibility to advise and coach managers with a strong customer service focus to provide a proactive and pragmatic professional advisory service to a variety of stakeholders.

We expect outstanding communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to develop a full understanding of the academic faculties and corporate directorates that you will support.

Experience working within Higher Education, or similar sectors such as local government, NHS, charity or public sector is preferred, but it is not essential.

The Faculty

The HR Directorate provides the strategy and infrastructure to enable Kingston University to achieve its core purpose.

The successful candidate will be joining an experienced and talented team of HR professionals who deliver HR operations, strategy and design for its 3k strong employee base.

The HR team works in partnership with academics and professional services staff to achieve the overall plans for the University.

Our professionals give high level support across the University along with responding to day-to-day queries from all areas and staff. In addition, they ensure our policies and procedures provide suitable frameworks to enable staff to operate successfully during their employment at Kingston University.

Together we aim to enable Kingston University to recruit, develop and motivate staff, so that we all contribute to the University’s success.

This is a full-time, permanent position with a starting salary of £36,904 per annum (increasing to £37,646 per annum on 1 August 2023 following the recent Higher Education pay award). This role attracts 25 days annual leave (rising by 1 day each year up to 30 days), in addition to bank holidays and auto-enrolment into the generous Local Government Pension Scheme which benefits from 20% employer contribution rates.

The Human Resources team is based at our Penrhyn Road campus but are required to visit other campuses based on business needs and operate an agile working pattern, with typically 60% of time spent in the office and 40% at home.
