About the role:
You will be working in a small team of Highways Maintenance Operatives, as part of a larger network of teams across Cornwall, maintaining and constructing our County’s roads and footpaths.
During your apprenticeship you will develop practical skills and a deep knowledge about highways maintenance operations in the Highways section of Cormac Solutions Highways & Environment service.
This is an apprenticeship post, and you will be learning whilst working gaining the level 2 Highways Maintenance Apprenticeship qualification and going to college / training centre as appropriate. Duties include (but are not limited to):
- All Highways maintenance and construction
- A range of routine manual tasks in relation to highways maintenance such as, laying kerbs, surfacing, repairing potholes, installing street Ironworks
- You will be using hand tools and powered tools or pedestrian plant
- You will be setting up traffic management
- Following written instructions and interpreting drawings
- Working with sub- contractors on larger schemes
We're looking for:
An employee who is passionate about working to maintain Cornwall’s road network, providing a safe travel route for the public. You will be committed to completing a level 2 Highways Maintenance apprenticeship and continuing your personal development.
- This is a hazardous role, so you must be at least 16 and 1/2 years old to apply. This ensures that you will be at least 18 years old by the time you complete the apprenticeship and are working unsupervised.
- Eligible to drive in the UK: driving licence or provisional driving licence and ability to achieve full driving licence within the first 12 months, plus access to transport and a willingness to travel to sites not serviced by public transport
- Ability to travel to Notter Bridge Technical Training Centre, near Saltash
- Current or predicted Maths and English Functional Skills Level 1 or above (equivalent to GCSE 1,2,3 or D,E,F,G or above)
- You will have a positive outlook and enjoy working outdoors.
- You will be trustworthy, dependable and work well in a team
- You will be able to communicate well with your team, your employers, tutors and the public
- You will be safety conscious, have a strong awareness of the health and safety of both yourself and others.
- You will be resilient, respectful, adaptable and keen to learn and complete your apprenticeship)
Our offer to you:
Salary: £14,500 for the first year, progressing to the Real Living Wage (as set by the Living Wage Foundation)
Contract: permanent, full time
Working Hours: 37 per week
Location: Cornwall - you will be allocated to a site and permanent supervisor upon appointment.
Base: you will likely be based at one of our main sites in Bodmin, Bude, Helston, Falmouth, Launceston, Liskeard, Newquay, Penzance, or Scorrier.
