Job description

Experienced Herdsperson needed for innovative and professional Jersey Dairy businesses.

Farming 200 Jersey cows just outside St Hellier, on the island of Jersey, we are a high-tech business who have invested in people, cow comfort and technology to help move our business forward to achieve exceptional cow welfare, sustainable farm profit, and the all-important work-life balance.

We milk through a 14/28 herringbone parlour, twice per day. We rear all the calves in hutches, using a milk-dispensing machine to feed them. With limited space on the island to expand, and housed in older sheds we have adapted these as best we can to improve feed space and lying space. With this in mind, we invested in a conveyer belt system (FeedStar) which has allowed us to increase passageways by 50%. In addition, Lely Discovery slurry robots operate on the farm, giving us and our team more time to focus on cows and calf health.

We are looking for an experienced and interested herdsperson to work alongside Manager Becky and the rest of the team to help this business improve and grow.

The roles will include: Looking after cows health and welfare, AI and foot trimming, Occaisonal milking (roughly 8 per week), helping to manage grazing platform and fencing, some machinery work, some data entry.

The successful candidate will have worked as a herdsperson for at least 3 years and can offer good insight to cow health and preventative measures. The candidate will be confident to work alongside a team and will communicate effectively.

Working hours will not usually exceed 55 hours per week, where busier times in the year can be expected. Regular time off can be negotiated: at the moment, staff work 3 days on, 1 day off. If the working days fall over a weekend, an additional half-day is given. Weekend hours are skeleton only, no additional jobs are planned for weekends.

The successful candidate will work a probation period for 6 months. A house will be included, as well as help to relocate. The accomodation currently available is not suitable for large families.
