Fixed term contract/secondment opportunity for 12 months

EPA Microbiology is the only Microbiology laboratory in the county! We provide clinical diagnostic services to help doctors understand what is making their patients sick and how best to treat them. This busy, exciting and essential service is run by an efficient and close-knit team, the laboratory is very focused on staff wellbeing and teamwork. We would love to get someone recruited who will integrate well into this dynamic department, with previous lab experience to help you hit the ground running and also contribute to improving the service. You must have the IBMS Specialist Portfolio to be eligible for this post. Applicants without this will not be considered at this stage.

As post holder you will be:

  • Performing routine laboratory procedures independently in all areas of the Microbiology Laboratory according to laboratory policies and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Working across all areas of the laboratory to prepare and process clinical material for testing, run automated analysers, participate in quality improvement, and train other staff.
  • Complete ongoing service training including CPD.
  • Work with other team members to plan workload and achieve collective goals.

  • Handle dangerous pathogens on a daily basis including containment level 3 organisms.
  • Communicate complex clinical technical service related test information to managers, consultants, nurses and other health care colleagues.
  • Answer telephone inquiries from Pathology users about test results and provide information about methodologies and service requirements.
  • Explain results when results do not agree with clinical presentation and investigate and problem solve situations as required.
  • Manage own work and day to day routine work in specialised services. Responsible for processing both urgent and routine work to maintain routine turnaround times in line with Trust and Departmental policies.
  • Maintain complex specialist equipment on a daily basis and sign off as fit for use.
  • Responsible for the efficient use of expensive tests and high value equipment.
  • Run test procedures on all methodologies on a daily basis to include calibration and quality control testing of sign off methods as fit for use.
  • Troubleshoot equipment and function after formal in-house training.
  • Implement policies in specialised areas and propose changes that will improve and develop the service for users inside and outside the Trust.
  • Maintain specialised databases in laboratory computer systems and patient storage databases on a daily basis.
  • Input patient data and results to include other colleagues work.
