Job Summary
You will be working as part of the H&I department that is located with one of our six clinical service laboratories and the role you perform will directly contribute to saving and improving patient’s lives.

The Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory carries out HLA typing, crossmatching and antibody screening in support of solid organ and stem cell transplantation, the provision of specialist blood products and immunogenetic and disease association testing. We have direct involvement with clinicians, for example, in transplantation, we use our test results to provide advice on the compatibility of a potential organ or stem cell donor and the recipient. Working within a modern laboratory environment you will be operating some of the latest laboratory analysers and testing systems to produce accurate and timely test results. Tests include molecular (DNA) based, including gene sequencing and multiplex solid phase platform assays.
Main duties of the job
In this role you will be you will be operating some of the latest laboratory analysers and testing systems to produce accurate and timely test results. Tests include molecular based assays, such as next generation sequencing. Your responsibilities include:
- Performing and interpreting a wide range of specialist scientific and assist in the development of technical procedures and tests relating to the issue of results or blood/tissue products.
- Conducting automated and manual investigations in an H&I laboratory, operating a range of complex and routine equipment, applying scientific, theoretical, and practical knowledge expected of a Healthcare Scientist
- Supporting other laboratory activities such as sample archiving and retrieval, preparation of reagents and maintenance of equipment.
- Training other colleagues in the relevant techniques.
You will be required to provide cover during operational difficulties with reasonable notice.
About You
Experience and Knowledge
- Experience in use of a range of laboratory analysers and equipment.
- Competent in a range of manual scientific techniques.
- Proficiency in relevant specialised laboratory techniques / environments
- Experience of working with information technology using Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint).
Qualifications and Training
- Degree in a relevant science e.g. molecular biology, human genetics or equivalent.
- Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).
- Willingness to undertake further training and development.
