Overview
The Spirometry Service Apprentice will assist in the delivery of respiratory assessments in the prescribed programmes of patient care. Working under the supervision of the nurse practitioner, and strictly in accordance with specific guidelines and protocols.

Role and Responsibilities
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required:
- Good standard of general education with a minimum of grade C/4 or above GCSE in Maths, Science and English.
- Experience of working in an office environment with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with stakeholders, including staff at all levels (clinical and non-clinical), internal and external partners
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- The provision of a range of quality assured respiratory function tests for the patients of Gateshead Practices.
- The inputting of test results and preparing electronic reports. Responsibility for the accuracy of results.
- Responsible for the routine maintenance, calibration and quality control of all laboratory equipment. The reporting of equipment faults to NP and admin support colleagues.
- Communicate requirements for accurate performance of appropriate investigations to patient.
- Communicate effectively with patients and colleagues using a range of agreed modalities including telephone, email and letter.
- Obtain brief medical history prior to testing to ensure safe practice.
- Maintain accurate and contemporaneous clinical notes.
- Ensure patient confidentiality, always.
- Plan and perform diagnostic assessments in accordance with national guidelines for spirometry.
- Interpretation of simple lung function tests
- Protect patients’ rights, ensuring confidentiality, privacy, data protection, safety and security and foster equality and diversity in the workplace.

In the course of their work the post-holder may have access to confidential information relating to the company, its staff, stakeholders, and patients. All such information must be treated as highly confidential, and any breach will be subject to disciplinary action. In addition, the nature of this role may mean that the post holder also has access to information regarding local general practices and this should also be treated as confidential.
