Description of Work

As of June 1, 2023, the new salary range will be $62,040 - $102,366

The primary purpose of the Nursing Eye Care Consultants is to assist individuals with maximizing use of their residual vision and to prevent blindness and restore vision by serving as a consultant for the medical eye care program. The NECC is responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, evaluating, and documenting low vision assessments and making recommendations for low vision aids. This position provides low vision assessments for individuals referred from DSB VR and IL programs.

Staff and consumer education is an important part of this position. The NECC provides individualized consumer/family education on their specific eye diagnosis. Education is also provided to the public through outreach events, to consumers at group trainings and to staff on an individualized or group basis.

NECC’s provide reviews of recommendations for medical eye care services to determine if individuals may qualify for financial assistance based on current policies. They determine when specific reviews must be directed to the DSB Consulting Ophthalmologist.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Demonstrated work experience utilizing a knowledge of nursing principles and techniques for medical, surgical, and mental health practices
  • Demonstrated work experience interpreting medical reports and applying the information to determine a plan of care
  • Ability to effectively communicate information to patients, families, and staff in a concise and descriptive manner verbally and in written form
  • Ability to provide services over a multi-county area
Management Preferences
  • Knowledge of how vision loss affects a person’s functional ability and understanding of what interventions will enhance independence
  • Knowledgeable on causes related to vision loss, current treatments, and low vision aids
  • Ability to interpret eye reports and conduct vision assessments and appl this information when making recommendations for low vision aids
  • Experience with individuals with visual disabilities

Physical Requirements (if applicable)
Light work: Physical requirements include some stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking from place to place and lifting up to 10 pounds frequently. The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions and may have to perform operations which include analyzing data and figures, transcribing, viewing and operating a computer terminal and operation of light office machines; ie, copiers and fax machines.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina and two years of clinical experience in the area of specialization.
