We are looking for a new staff member who is willing to learn new skills and develop their role within our Ophthalmology department. An exciting opportunity has arisen within Ophthalmology Outpatients at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital and Cheltenham General Hospital for an enthusiastic, caring and organised individual to join our large multidisciplinary team.
This role will involve patient care in a clinic setting performing visual acuity testing, recording intra-ocular pressure, instilling eye drops, assisting in our injecting service clinics and Minor Operation clinics.
Previous experience as a HCA is desirable but not essential for this position. You will be provided with further training in the role within our speciality on starting employment with us.
The position is rotational between sites and will be a varied shift pattern depending on clinic need.

The Trust provides acute hospital services from two large district general hospitals, Cheltenham General Hospital and Gloucestershire Royal Hospital.
The Trust operates three Ophthalmology Outpatient clinics, two at Cheltenham Hospital and one at Gloucester. Clinic's run Monday to Saturday treating a large range of Ophthalmic conditions and performing Pre-Operative Assessments for patients who are going to be having surgery. We are a large friendly multidisciplinary team each specialising in their own area of Ophthalmology but also working closely together to provide the best care and outcome for the patients we treat.

The post holder, under supervision, will assist the multidisciplinary team in delivering individualised planned patient care in a safe and healthy environment which promotes equality for all individuals.

5. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
- Basic numeracy and literacy, including computer literacy.
- Knowledge of basic nursing and personal care.
- Appropriate verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Flexible and responsive to working environment.
- Practical ability, prioritisation and time management.
- Demonstrate potential for further development.
- Previous Ophthalmology experience including Visual Acuity Testing, Tonopen and Eye Drop Installation desirable but not essential.
- Ability to get on well with people at all levels and work effectively as a team member.
- Working within the multidisciplinary team supporting the delivery of assessed and evaluated programmes of care.
- Under guidance, deliver safe patient care within a challenging and changing clinical environment, using equipment and resources safely and as appropriate.
- Discretion and understanding of confidentiality and data protection.
- Understand and adhere to Trust Policies and Procedures.
- Undertake specific delegated tasks following the appropriate training and competency level e.g. patient observations and patient personal hygiene.
- To adhere to all Trust policies and procedures.
- To communicate effectively, especially where patient ability to do so is compromised. On occasions, the job holder may be exposed to distressing or emotional circumstances.
- Completion of departmental competencies specific to the Trust for instilling eye drops & carrying out of technical tasks as required by the service. eg. Refractive visions, tonometry, measuring of visual acuity. This list is not exhaustive.

- May be extended to frequently manoeuvre patients/objects over 15kg using appropriate aids for short periods of time.

- May be required to work in confined spaces.
- Ability to work where the work pattern may be unpredictable e.g. prioritising patient demands.
