Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust provide services from two main hospitals, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and West Middlesex University Hospital, and a number of clinics across London and the South-East. We have nearly 6,000 members of staff that care for nearly one million people locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Both hospitals provide full clinical services, including full maternity, emergency and children’s, in addition to a range of community-based services across London, such as award-winning sexual health and HIV clinics.

Currently the Radiology department at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital is looking for enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Health Care Assistant.

A Health Care Assistant (HCA) is a member of the health care team who works under the supervision of a registered health or social care professional.

A HCA can undertake a range of roles within their overall job and their level of responsibility will be appropriate/ commensurate to the level of knowledge and skills they have acquired.

At Band 3 level, this will involve working with indirect supervision of a Radiographer/Sonographer or Radiologist. At this Band you will also work with the support of a Band 4 Health Care Assistant receiving guidance and training when required. Irrespective of the patient care pathway, the core competences at each level should be consistently applied.

  • Provide high quality clinical care to patients, in line with the Trust values and in accordance with professional regulations
  • Accept delegated responsibility for specific activities/areas from the lead nurse
  • Work in line with Trust policies, objectives, protocols and local guidelines, whilst also being aware of the importance of their role in supporting members of the team, and always adhering to the Trust values
  • Work autonomously and with others to always deliver high standards of care to patients.
  • Communicate in line with Trust values, to patients, carers and staff at all times.
  • Take every opportunity to continue to develop, practice and expand their own general and specialist nursing skills
  • Maintain high standards of professional and ethical responsibility, and accountability and be aware of the medico-legal aspects of nursing, in line with professional, regulatory and local guidance

We have recently completed a £30m expansion of our adult and neonatal critical care facilities at Chelsea and Westminster and are planning an ambitious £60m development of an Ambulatory Diagnostics Centre at West Middlesex.

Clinical
  • To work in all the imaging rooms of the Radiology Department while investigations are carried out
  • To have knowledge of the equipment required, and to ensure this equipment is always available and in date
  • To assist in any interventional procedures: • Drainages
  • Core biopsies
  • Cannulatiion
  • Hsyterosalpingogram / Micturating cystogram
  • Fine needle aspirations
  • PICC line insertions
  • To inform the patients of procedure and after-care, and to attend sensitively to their welfare throughout the investigation
  • Use clinical standards to participate in the process of monitoring the quality of care delivered. Act to ensure that nursing practice is of the highest standard, in line with Trust and CQC standards.
  • Assist with the evaluation of care and initiate any action required, for example liaising with the multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Undertake any reasonable and relevant clinical or non-clinical functions commensurate with their banding
  • Recognise and act on situations that may be detrimental to the health and well-being of the individual
  • Report accidents, incidents and losses, in line with Trust policy
  • Take on extra duties/responsibilities as delegated and agreed by the Lead nurse/ Clinical Imaging Service Manager within their capability/limitations.
Professional
  • Maintain professional behaviour at all times and promote a positive image of Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundational Trust at all times, in line with Trust values
  • Contribute to a high quality safe working environment in which patients receive a high standard of care
  • Understand and practice in accordance with Trust and Unit policies and procedures
  • Maintain a safe working environment recognising the health and safety requirements of patients, staff and visitors
  • Ensure all strategies, policies and protocols relating to infection control are implemented and monitored and that appropriate and timely action is taken in response to ensure the prevention of control of infection
  • Protect patient confidentiality and act according to the Data Protection Act
  • Understand local audit processes and participate in Trust audits locally
  • Work with members of the team implementing a quality approach to service provision, in line with Trust Quality Care Standards
  • Report all complaints, incidents or accidents to the Lead Nurse and take appropriate action
Education and Development
  • Be responsible for, and demonstrate personal professional development, maintain up to date clinical skills and ensure mandatory training is always current
  • Participate in established research projects and clinical audit in local area under the guidance of Radiologists
  • Ensure own appraisal is up to date
Communication and Relationship Building
  • Ensure that communication is effective between the patient, relatives and members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Ensure communication is used effectively in the interest of patient care, including the use of clinical incident reporting if necessary
  • Demonstrate politeness, courtesy and sensitivity in dealing with patients/clients, visitors/relatives and colleagues, maintaining good customer relations and recognising individuality and rights for each patient in line with Trust Values
  • Work cohesively with all members of the breast team in ensuring that the very best services are provided to patients at all times
  • Work effectively within a multi-racial and cultural environment
  • Ensure all communication, which may be complex, contentious or sensitive, is undertaken in a responsive and inclusive manner, focusing on improvement and ways to move forward
  • Ensure all communication is presented appropriately to the different recipients, according to levels of understanding, type of communication being imparted and possible barriers such as language, culture, understanding or physical or mental health conditions
