About us

The UCL Centre for Advanced Research Computing (ARC) is UCL’s new institute for infrastructure and innovation in digital research - the supercomputers, datasets, software and people that make computational science and digital scholarship possible. We are an innovative hybrid: a professional services department that delivers reliable and secure infrastructure and services to UCL research groups, and a laboratory for research and innovation in the application of advanced computational and data intensive research methods, working in partnership with academics from all fields. We are a home for the research technology professionals - research software engineers, HPC systems engineers, dev-ops specialists, data engineers, data scientists and data stewards - who support and collaborate in the delivery of UCL research, providing outstanding career development opportunities for these new kinds of research professionals.

About the role

Research Data Stewards (also known as research data managers, data consultants, data wranglers, or bioinformaticians) provide technically focused support and consultancy to researchers at UCL, helping them to improve their data management, align with university and funder policies, and enable Open Science and FAIR data.

They will spend much of their time embedded within research projects, but also contribute to new research proposals and collaborate on research data service design, feeding in researcher requirements to ensure that the suite of research support services offered by UCL remains relevant and effective.

Salary range for the Research Data Steward positions is as follows:

  • Assistant Research Data Steward: £31,131 to £39,333 (including London Allowance) depending on experience
  • Research Data Steward: £38,308 to £50,047 ( (including London Allowance) depending on experience
  • Senior Research Data Steward: £47,414 to £60,592 ( (including London Allowance) depending on experience
  • Principal Research Data Steward: £60,592 to £77,787 ( (including London Allowance) depending on experience

Please note that the applications for these positions are short-listed and reviewed on a regular basis; where a post is not yet available we may keep your application on file, and contact you when a suitable post is identified.

About you

Research Data Stewards will have experience of conducting data-intensive research in an academic research environment and the technical skills to document, process and transform data. They will need to be an excellent communicator with the ability to explain technical and specialised concepts clearly to non-technical academic and support staff.

In this round, we are particularly looking for:

1. At Principal grade, a research data governance expert with significant experience of working with sensitive data and informing the development of services to securely analyse and share such data. They will ensure that the university has the systems and processes in place to enable productive, secure, and innovative research that is both trustworthy and reproducible.

2. At Senior grade, a data steward with a strong background of working with sensitive data who can help research teams with data governance. They should understand information security and risk management, and have a good knowledge of the issues involved in handling and disseminating sensitive data.

3. Data stewards with experience of managing healthcare data and a familiarity with the processes involved in clinical trials.

4. Generalist data stewards with an academic research background.

Job description and person specification for each of the Research Data Steward positions can be accessed at the bottom of this page. Please supply a cover letter setting out how you meet the selection criteria.

This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa.

We will consider applications to work on a part-time, flexible and job share basis wherever possible. This role is eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 20% on site.

In the event we get a high number of applications, we may close the advert early before the published closing date. As a minimum we will keep all adverts open for 2 weeks.

This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Services Staff. Please visit UCL's HR page for more information.
