Health & Safety Assistant - full time, permanent role
Ingliston, Edinburgh
£25,000 to £27,000 per annum
The successful candidate will work closely with the Health and Safety Manager and Facilities Team. They will be integral in assisting the development of a Health and Safety and asset management system.
The role will involve all aspect of health and safety management including preparation for events, premises management, providing competent advice and supporting Event Managers. Working closely with Event Managers is an essential part of the role; therefore, the successful candidate must obtain good communication skills at all levels. Building relationships across the Society is key to assisting in the charities progression.
Main Duties:
To include but not restricted to the following:
- To provide support and assistance to the RHASS Health and Safety Manager.
- To conduct basic inductions with contractors and new employees of the charity
- To review/support clients, events and contractors achieve a competent level of General Risk Assessments and Fire Risk Assessments
- To control and support the permit to work system, where required
- Assist with the implementation of an online health and safety management system
- Responsible for recording and maintaining health and safety training
- Plan and coordinate IOSH managing safely courses
- Understand and support the control of contractors on-site
- Assist with the asbestos register and document management procedure
- Attend Events to provide general Health and Safety guidance and support
- Providing reports and conduct inspections of events / premises to identify any concerns
- Attending, and on occasion minuting specific meetings
- Keeping up to date with legislation, guide and advice.
- To maintain development levels and knowledge of health and safety legislation, providing updates on progress through the PDR process
- Ensuring that safety legislation is being followed and that the statutory requirements applicable to Events are being maintained.
- Providing administrative support to the health and safety team
- To proactively promote a safety conscious culture across the Society and events.
Key Skills :
- Competent in Risk Assessment Process
- Able to work to and set timescales
- Ability to collate and present information clearly
- Ability to identify foreseeable hazards to staff, contractors and members of the public presented by Clients.
- Able to confirm that Risk Assessments clearly detail suitable controls to mitigate the hazards identified in Risk Assessments.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- PC literate & Reliable
- Ability to work conscientiously and without supervision at times
Essential :
- Nebosh General Certificate or equivalent
- Enthusiastic approach to health and safety
- Practical knowledge and application of legislation.
- Ability to conduct hazard spotting and basic risk analyse
- Good oral and written skills
- To maintain good relations with all our clients by treating them with courtesy and respect at all times
Desirable:
- Problem solving skills, capable of using their own initiative when required
- Strong organisational skills, self-motivation and flexibility in approach to the working day.
- Ability to communicate at all levels
- Event safety knowledge
- Full UK driver’s license is preferred
- Member of IOSH
- Ability to plan and prioritise own workload
- Knowledge of fire risk assessments
The successful candidate must have a flexible approach to work and be able to cover out of hours and weekend working as necessary. Additional hours are likely to be required in the run up to, and during the Royal Highland Show in June.
