Summary of Job Purpose:
To assist Residents with activities of daily living in accordance with their plan of care, recognising their rights, choices and individuality, maintaining and supporting independence to optimum level.
Key duties and responsibilities:
The main requirements of the Carer are:
· Ensure the highest possible levels of care are maintained by supporting/assisting Residents, when required, with washing, toileting, dressing, undressing, and all other aspects of daily living.
· Assist Residents in all aspects of their care needs (e.g. physical, emotional and spiritual). Provide attention when needed, whilst ensuring Residents retain their comfort and dignity.
· Pay particular attention to assisting Residents who have limited mobility, or physical / learning difficulties, making the best use of aids provided.
· Closely monitor Residents who may be confused and / or who have behavioural problems.
· Assist in the promotion of continence.
· Assist in the delivery of care for Residents for clients who are dying or who have a progressive illness. Assist with last offices.
· Observe care planning needs for Residents and complete written daily records as instructed and in line with the Company’s policies and procedures.
· Assist in framework of social activities by interacting with Residents and helping them continue with hobbies and activities in the Care Home.
· Answer Nurse Call system, giving assistance as required. Answer the door and telephone appropriately. Respond accordingly, and pass on messages promptly.
· Under the supervision and guidance of Senior Staff, report on the well-being of Residents.
· Carry out regular checks on Residents at intervals determined by Senior Staff members.
· Make visitors feel welcome. Provide refreshments/assistance as and when required.
· Make and change beds, ensuring that rooms are clean and tidy, and commodes are empty, in line with the Care Home’s disposal of waste policy. Ensure the Care Home’s resources are used appropriately.
· Clean and maintain equipment used by Residents / Relatives e.g. wheelchairs, hearing aids, spectacles etc. Ensure the Care Home is kept clean and tidy, in line with the Company’s attention to detail philosophy.
· If applicable, care for Residents clothing and rooms as named, and ensure that all clothing is recorded and clearly marked.
· Ensure full privacy and dignity is maintained for the dying and the bereaved, in line with the Company’s policies and procedures.
· Assist Residents who need help during meal times (be aware of swallowing difficulties, dietary requirements etc). Assist with serving food / drinks as requested / required. Wash up as requested / required.
· Escort Residents travelling to and from the Care Home e.g. on social outings, hospital visits etc.
· Practice maximum integrity in all dealings with Residents personal and financial affairs, and avoid abuse of the privileged relationship that exists with Residents.
Care Standards and Quality Assurance
· Protect all Residents from abuse and report any concerns as per Company policies and procedures
· Observe, monitor and record information relating to Services Users including weight, nutrition, fluid intakes/outputs, position record charts and urine tests. Care records to be completed as per Company policy
· Report any observed change in the condition of a Resident, to include any untoward incident
· Complete care records as per company policy
· Attend to the comfort, personal appearance and hygiene of Residents at all times
· Prepare food trays and dining areas. Assist Services Users with their meals as required ensuring that meal times are a sociable and enjoyable event, ensuring that trays and crockery are removed from dining areas and stored appropriately after meal times.
· Assist with the reception of new Residents, ensuring that all appropriate documentation is completed on time and that the Resident is orientated to their surroundings and neighbors
· Contribute towards the programme of activities, ensuring adequate and appropriate person centered activities
· Support Residents in maintaining their own room and belongings
· Escort Residents to hospital, dentist, shops or other approved excursions
· Participate and comply with the key workers/named nurse system
· Show courtesy and respect to Residents at all times to ensure that they enjoy the highest quality of life, respect the confidentiality of Services Users and their families at all times and involve families and friends in the Residents care
· Value the life experience and knowledge of Residents, showing them courtesy and respect, observing their privacy and protecting their dignity at all times
· Work in partnership with Residents ensuring that their views, choices and interests are at the center of all care and service provided by the Home
· Promote positive risk taking by Residents as an essential part of everyday life, assisting them to maximize their abilities and promote their independence
· Respect each Resident as an individual, treating them equally and valuing their cultural and social diversity
· Understand the importance of Residents maintaining links with the community, valuing and supporting the role that relatives and friends play in their care
· Provide a holistic approach to person centered care
Customer Care
· Greet all visitors, and answer the telephone in a friendly, courteous and efficient manner and promote Porthaven Care Homes and your home in particular, positively at all times in the local community
· Communicate effectively with Residents, their relatives/friends, other staff and external visitors to the Home and deal sensitively with their concerns.
· Keep personal knowledge and job skills up to date to ensure that Residents receive the best possible standards of care and service
Health and Safety
· Carry out all duties in a safe manner having regard to the health, safety and welfare of self, staff, Residents and other persons within Porthaven Care Homes
· Ensure that both you and your staff, have read and understood, and at all times comply with, all relevant company policies and procedures and all relevant statutory responsibilities including Fire arrangements, Health & Safety issues including moving and handling, COSHH regulations, maintaining records diligently and accurately as required
· Dispose of soiled linen and other waste in accordance with Company policy. Observe good Infection Control practices as stated in the Company policy
Generic Core Duties
· Positively promote the Home through personal conduct both within and out with working hours
· Ensure that you have read and understood all relevant company policies and procedures and that you comply with these at all times
· Attend and participate in all training sessions and staff meetings
· Maintain good working relationships with all colleagues at all times
· Any other reasonable task requested by your Home Manager which is within your area of competence.
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Part-time hours: 12-48 per week
Salary: £11.00 per hour
