General Practice Health Care Assistant (HCA)
Well Street Surgery (GP surgery)
We are looking for a healthcare assistant who is fully trained in the role and has the skills, knowledge and experience necessary to be up and running as a new and valued member of our nursing team after a short period of induction.
Please note: if you are not either eligible to work; currently working or trained as a healthcare assistant in general practice, we will not be able to consider your application.
This is a full-time role for 37 hours per week Monday to Friday - although part-time applicants with the required skills, knowledge and experience will be considered.
Well Street Surgery is a busy GP surgery with a list size of 14,500 patients in a varied and multicultural area of Hackney in East London.
We are a large, friendly team with our own purpose-built surgery. We pride ourselves on providing high quality care and excellent customer service for all our patients.
There is continuous support for members of our practice team, together with development opportunities to ensure upskilling and career progression are available.
There is a weekly meeting for the nursing team as well as regular whole practice team meetings and a subsidised, healthy lunch cooked fresh daily on the premises daily that provides everyone on site with a chance to meet up, share experiences, learn from each other in an informal setting and socialise over good food.
The successful candidate will be running their own patient clinics yourself and working as part of the practice team providing safe and effective clinical care to our patients and helping us to achieve our quality and activity patient care targets.
Job summary:
HCAs help to make sure the patient experience at Well Street Surgery is as comfortable and stress-free as possible. The HCA role can be a stepping stone into a variety of other NHS healthcare roles - for someone who wants to progress to further qualifications - providing individual patient care with a direct influence on their health using their skills, knowledge and the continuity of care of the GP surgery setting.
Our HCAs work strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols under the direct supervision of our practice nurses and GP partners in assisting the practice clinical team to meet both the planned and unplanned needs of our patients.
Duties and responsibilities:
- New patient health checks
- Phlebotomy
- Spirometry
- Diabetic foot checks
- NHS Health Checks
- Lifestyle options and choices
- Basic observations including BP, height weight, temperature and pulse
- Processing and management of laboratory samples requested by GPs/nurses
- Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
- Surgical equipment and vaccine re-stocking and stock rotation
- Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms
- Chaperoning duties
- Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations
- Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted
- Calling eligible patients to book their appointment for routine appointments eg routine smears, immunisations and NHS health checks
- Ordering health promotion information
