JOB DESCRIPTION - HEALTHCARE ASSISTANT

15-25 hours per week (mutually agreeable). Additional hours can be worked in our Extended Access clinics (Weekday evenings 6.30 - 8pm and Saturdays 9am-2pm)

REPORTS TO: NURSE MANAGER (Clinically)
PRACTICE MANAGER (Administratively)

Job Summary:

Working under the indirect supervision of our Practice Nurses and strictly in accordance with specific Practice guidelines and protocols, the Healthcare Assistant will assist the practice team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.

The Surgery has two sites (Milnthorpe and Carnforth) and this post will be required to work at both sites.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Baseline patient health checks for example Health Checks & New Patient Checks
  • ECG recording
  • Phlebotomy
  • Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients’ health and well-being
  • Undertaking specific clinical activities for named patients that have been delegated and taught specifically in relation to that individual
  • Helping to raise awareness of health and well-being and how it can be promoted
  • Recording and updating data consistently and accurately onto computerised clinical system (Emis Web)
  • Administer seasonal influenza, pneumococcal vaccinations and B12 injections as per the

Practice Patient Specific Protocols/Directives (Training will be provided)

  • Processing and management of laboratory samples
  • Cleansing and maintenance of surgical equipment
  • Vaccine/cold chain storage, monitoring and recording
  • Clearing and re-stocking consulting rooms
  • Preparing and maintaining environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions including assisting GPs during the performance of minor operations

This job description covers the main duties we ideally want our Health Care Assistant to carry out, however we undertake continuing improvement, and you may be required to take on additional duties appropriate to the role in support of this work as mutually agreed, and only once any relevant training and authorisation has been given.

  • Reporting potential risks identified.

  • Participate in audit where appropriate.
