POST: DOMICILIARY CARE ASSISTANT/PERSONAL CARE ASSISTANT

JOB PURPOSE:
- To provide support to children/adults of various ethnic backgrounds, who may be affected by physical, sensory, ageing, behavioural, cognitive, epilepsy and learning difficulties, including mental illnesses.
- To provide personal care and stimulatory support to service users - especially assisting them with their person presentations skills and their maintenance of personal hygiene. Moreover, to offer practical support towards accessing stimulatory activities within the community.
- To support service users with mobility problems and other physical disabilities - including incontinence and help in the use of aids and personal equipment (wheelchair/standing frames etc.)
- To provide short break or outreach support – to service users that are isolated and confined within their homes. Trips to public places that are socially inclusive and of interest.
- To maximise independence and adopt an enabling approach for clients - having due regard for their social, psychological, physical and cultural needs. People should be supported to live independently within their own homes.
- To engage young people/adults with transition needs/learning difficulties; to improve their learning outcomes as well as maximising their potential for independence
- To develop a healthy working relationship based on trust and providing companionship and supervision to vulnerable clients.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- You will provide care and support to people of varied ethnicities; affected by numerous disabilities and health conditions. You will work in a person centred way, communicate well, build relationships and promote equality and diversity
- You will contribute to activities and work in a safe way, keeping and filing clear records, keeping to regulations and following the agencies protocols and ways of working. You will maintain friendly/links with formal and informal stakeholders.
- You will be supporting disabled service users in meeting their personal care/hygiene skills as well as delivering short break services to those concerned. Amongst others you will be:
- Assisting clients with facial wash, bathing/showers, strip-washes, brushing teeth and hair comb etc.
- Assisting in performing practical/household chores that client is unable to do
- Preparing simple meals, serve drinks and ensure feeds (as determined by clients care plan)
- Assisting with dressing/undressing and in the management of incontinence
- Washing/ironing clothing as well as isolate soiled clothing for laundry collection
- Employing safe moving and handling techniques where appropriate
- Ensure safety in the home environment, outdoors as well as during trips/journeys
- Assisting those with mobility/physical problems and those using aids and personal equipment
- Assisting wheelchair users with safe transfers from toilet, bed to wheel/chair
- Supporting others with travel training, road safety/awareness and stranger danger
- Accompanying clients to any clinical appointments (as determined)
- Assisting with shopping/trips to the Post Office and in managing clients finances
- Providing support towards managing challenging/unpredictable behaviours
- Maximising client independence and adopt an enabling approach.
- Working in partnership; providing companionship/befriending services as appropriate
- Maintaining friendly/hospitable links with client’s relatives, neighbours and key professionals
- Providing social/therapeutic/emotional support to clients
- Providing communication assistance to clients to gage their needs, wishes and preferences
- Supporting to make decisions in the best interests of the young person or adult

Administration:
- You will maintain and forward accurately signed timesheets on a weekly/monthly basis for authorisation and payment. All records will be securely stored
- You will maintain accurate client records/logs and report significant changes to your supervisor.
Working time:
- You will cover shifts with other colleagues, especially in the context of holiday and sickness cover.
- Your work hours will be primarily determined by service user needs and care plans. Work hours cannot exceed a 48 hour working week
Team work and functional role:
- You will be a supportive team member and continually developing your skills. You will work together with colleagues, service users and partner agencies
- You will work holistically with other professionals in addressing the clients unmet needs. You will report any significant changes about a client’s health status
- You will undertake instruction from your line manager. Senior staff will supervise and oversee your role as a care assistant
- You will pass on relevant information to managers about changes required for a service user and to colleagues that are involved or to be replaced
- You will undertake any other duties commensurate with your role
Health and Safety:
- You will take reasonable steps to ensure your own health and safety and those of clients/others who may be affected by your acts or omissions.
- You will familiarise yourself with safety arrangements that apply to your work functions
Legislation, policy and procedures
- You will undertake all duties in line with International Care Limited policies and procedures.
- You will comply with Health and Safety Act 1974 as well as Data Protection Act 1998. This list is not exhaustive and agreed protocols must be adhered to
Supervision, conduct and Continuing Professional Development
- You will have obtained the Skills for Care Certificate as part of your working role, and if not, will undergo requisite training in order to do so
- You will adhere to the 15 standards set out by the Skills for Health Council as well as the Code of Conduct for Healthcare support workers and Adult Social Care workers
- You will attend general/specialist and on-going training as required and as part of your Continuing Professional Development.
- You will display skills of expertise, tact and persuasion with difficult clients i.e. those with autism, learning, behavioural, dementia or mental health difficulties.
- You will attend regular staff briefings/meetings/training sessions as requirements of your job/role. You will comply with individual supervision sessions and annual appraisals
Confidentiality:
- You will not discussing any personal information about clients or staff with unauthorised people. You should develop a trusting relationship with families and share information only a need to know basis with professionals (and with consent).
Job Types: Full-time, Part-time
Salary: £10.00-£12.00 per hour
