Job description

The Same Day Admission Unit (SDAU) is a dedicated department which admits and prepares adult patients for elective surgery. Our patients attend our unit for their admission, and after their surgery they are then transferred to an inpatient ward for their recovery and discharge. On average we admit up to 150 patients a week!

Our teams works closely with other departments in the Trust, including Preoperative Assessment, Surgical Specialty teams, Anaesthetics, Theatre complex and more.

We are seeking to employ an enthusiastic and highly motivated Healthcare Assistant (HCA) to join our small but busy team. We will support the post holder to undertake the nationally recognized Care Certificate training program to help our nursing team deliver high quality patient care.

A typical in the HCA role in SDAU comprises working in partnership with the qualified staff, being able to communicate with the wider multidisciplinary team and supporting the admission of a variety of patients with a variety of needs.

The patients we admit into our unit are often having major surgery, with life-changing outcomes, and it is our role to make sure they are adequately prepared. This includes any preoperative tests such as observations, blood monitoring, pregnancy test and urinalysis. Other enhanced skills include venepuncture and ECG.

  • To accurately and promptly carry out the instructions of the Registered Nurse who is professionally accountable for the delivery of care.
  • To deliver care and carry out duties as specified within the Trusts Approved core task list for Healthcare assistants.
  • To report to Registered Nurse any patient who gives cause for concern or any observed changes in the patient’s condition.
  • To respond appropriately to clinical emergencies to ensure the patient receives appropriate care.
  • Provide and deliver a high standard of individualised personal nursing care.
  • To report all care that has been given to patients within the team to a Registered Nurse.
  • To accurately document all care delivered to patients, countersigned by a Registered Nurse maintaining confidentiality at all times.
  • To assist in the preparation of patients and equipment for treatment, investigations or procedures as directed by the Registered Nurse.
  • To keep the clinical area clean and tidy maintaining a safe environment.
  • To adhere to Trust infection control procedures demonstrating an understanding of cross infection.
