An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Health and Safety Advisor to join the team! The Compliance, Risk and Internal Audit Directorate provides audits and monitoring then health and safety advice, support and training to all our central and front-line services. As a Health and Safety Advisor, you would be key in developing and delivering effective and efficient health and safety standards, policies, processes, and systems in order that services can manage the risks to our staff, residents and participants (customers and service users).

THE ROLE

As a Health and Safety Advisor you will assist in delivering a full Health and Safety service, supporting all parts of the business and providing advice in a business focused, consistent and timely way. You will oversee and support our outsourced Health and Safety compliance contract. This contract will be a source of support and aid you in some of the work you do. You will also actively support the business on Safety, Quality and Assurance matters by conducting regular site visits (as per our Annual planner and unannounced visits), assure the business the right standards are in place including engagement visits and monitor progress against the site improvement plans, engaging with teams and identifying further improvements and providing solutions.

You will work closely with the Regional Risk and Assurance Manager, to support operations and where appropriate support and liaise with external stakeholders, regulators and customers. You will also liaise with our central and local leadership teams and support and advise on industry best practices.

As a subject matter expert you will advise the business on best practices and standards within each type of service to ensure the service delivery reflects the service specification and contractual obligations, and to maintain and improve CQC ratings for registered services.

Specifically, you will provide advice and support to all SIG’s colleagues by ensuring health, and safety practices are identified and implemented in line with our company values, and in accordance with Group’s Health and Safety Policy, acting on identified risks as and when required, helping to ensure a safe working environment for our people and those affected by our actions including visitors, Service Participants and contractors, including but not exhaustive when they are lone working, across our properties and offices.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • To ensure that Health and Safety requirements are set and met throughout the company
  • To advise, support and train managers in the Management of Health and Safety
  • Advise colleagues of current legislation and good practice to enable them to carry out their duties and exercise their responsibilities,
  • To carry out regular Health and Safety Audits within London and surrounding areas, to ensure that SIG’s policies are being adhered to and that the company is compliant with the law
  • To assist in the preparation of Health and Safety operational strategies including writing and review of Policy, statement and Health and Safety Manual sections
  • Coordinate and attend local Health and Safety Committee meetings across the Group
  • To assist the Director of Compliance, Risk and Internal Audit, and other team members in continuously improving the Health and Safety Management system and service to our colleagues
  • To support Director of Compliance, Risk and Internal Audit in reviewing all documents within Health and Safety remit
  • Support the Compliance, Risk and Internal Audit team in CHAS - preparing for assessment ensuring compliance targets and external accreditations are met and maintained
  • Responsibility for reviewing risk and COSHH assessments with Service Managers
  • Review accident and near miss reporting including RIDDORs and investigations that involve Health & Safety
  • Review and update COSHH database

ABOUT YOU

To be successful as a Health and Safety Advisor you will need excellent attention to detail with a problem-solving mindset with excellent research and report writing skills; able to summarise complex information verbally and in writing. You will also need a working knowledge and experience of up to date Legislation in health and safety in care and support setting.

As a must you will need an appropriate professional qualification: Minimum GCSE Level including English and Maths or able to demonstrate equivalent, will need to be Qualified to minimum of TechIOSH level or equivalent, and have experience in governance systems and structures including auditing skills, risk management, investigations, complaint handling and report writing.

OTHER KEY SKILLS:

Essential

  • Proven experience in quality standards and continuous improvement systems and approach
  • Experience of writing and implementing policies, procedures, and department handbooks
  • Experience of organising and delivering training workshops in disciplines within the health and social care sector and supported housing
  • Awareness and understanding of the impact of stigma and marginalisation on people who experience mental health and/or substance misuse issues and their needs (physical, social, cultural and emotional)
  • Able to communicate (written and oral) with a wide range of staff at all levels across the SIG as well as Service Users and external stakeholders
  • Strong computer literacy skills and digital dexterity

Desirable

  • Track record of implementing improvements and change across a range of Service User focused services
  • Understanding of the issues Service Users face and the interventions that are most helpful
