Role Purpose
The Head of WPB Channel Islands & Isle of Man (CIIOM) is responsible for leading the WPB and GPB businesses and holds delegated authority for the Regional Head of WPB, EMEA as well as the HBEU CEO .
The role-holder must create a conducive culture to drive the strategic priorities as outlined in the Country Strategic Plan and be accountable for holistic risk management, through controls and governance across complex and multiple jurisdictions (multi-site, varied regulatory / cross –border environments).
Execution must be delivered strongly and safely in a balanced and sustainable fashion; sensitive to the long-term interests of the global brand and aligned to local market dynamics, consumer interests, competition and regulatory considerations.
The role holder is responsible for defining the customer and product strategic positioning of the CIIOM WPB business with execution responsibilities for the Group propositions and product objectives for the WPB business in CIIOM, leading to increased customer acquisition and reduced attrition, to be delivered as a best-in-class Customer Experience for CIIOM customers.

Principal Accountabilities:
Impact on the Business
Active and engaged member of WPB EMEA leadership team:
- Provide leadership across WPB, driving the people agenda and role modelling the HSBC values
- Represent WPB externally with clients, regulators and other third parties within CIIOM
Work in partnership with Global Function Heads in CIIOM, to implement business strategy
- Determine actions necessary to drive and improve business performance and coordinate implementation across the region to deliver in line with FRP
- Responsible for determining the actions to deliver strategic, commercial, customer targets with each market
- Optimise the channel mix to ensure all channels are meeting plan at optimum cost
- Oversee strategic channel planning, ensuring regulatory compliance
- Determine actions necessary to improve business performance and co-ordinate implementation
Provide constructive challenge to existing practices/proposed initiatives and generate new and innovative solutions to address complex issues facing WPB
Deliver future business capabilities required to implement the strategy and drive WPB towards its desired operating model, ensuring the model is maintained
Coordination, agreement and implementation of WPB strategic plans by working with WPB ExCo and CIIOM ExCo to agree country specific business priorities. This includes rolling operation plans, cost saving targets and the implementation of the Strategy across WPB ensuring the successful delivery of business performance.
Monitors financial performance by analysing and managing direct and indirect costs.
- Initiating a change acceptance framework to allow change to embed and any cost saves to be fed through to budget
- Driving streamlining and cost saving initiatives.
- Responsible for executing change initiatives
- Understanding and challenging Global Functions and DBS recharges as applicable
- Initiating corrective actions to minimise impact of cost variances.
- Oversee the monitoring and the effective execution of cost initiatives
Customers / Stakeholders
- Proactively drive WPB strategy and objectives with partner functions including DBS, Finance and Risk and provide business solution and proactively manage the DBS stakeholder relationship.
- Work in partnership with WPB stakeholders to define timely, relevant and cost efficient end-to-end technology and operations solutions required to meet the needs of WPB
- Work in partnership with Finance to manage the total cost base of WPB; including setting, monitoring and managing streamlining initiatives to achieve cost saves
Leadership & Teamwork
- Lead a team across Islands and Businesses of c.660FTE
- Creates a high performing and diverse senior leadership team, underpinned by robust succession planning, talent management, resourcing and performance management.
- Works collaboratively with other senior executives in EMEA WPB, Europe, Global Line of Businesses, Principal Business Units, Global Functions and DBS to input to strategies, plans and priorities for HSBC Bank plc CIIOM in support of the Group strategy.
- Builds a strong network across WPB, Europe and the wider Group.
- Implements the Group’s performance management and reward strategies, promoting sustainable business growth and allocating rewards that align to responsible risk management.
- Drive a focus on creating sustainable change, with a one-bank mind-set
- Drive strong performance while embedding a values-led culture with the immediate team and across wider regional team
Operational Effectiveness & Control
- Ensure effective governance structures are in place to enable oversight, control and monitoring of strategy execution and implementation plans (change governance)
- Identify and proactively manage current and emerging risks related to changes to services, processes and systems, across all WPB functions, delivered by or impacting WPB
- Implement global risk and control standards for WPB and drive the implementation via the Chief Control Officer of these through the Risk & Control network
- Partner with WPB and DBS Leadership Teams to identify, measure, mitigate, monitor and report risk and ensure consistency across functions within Country.
- Facilitate the execution of the 3 Lines of Defence model by ensuring audits are planned, executed and reporting effectively, working across functions where appropriate
- Identify and execute on opportunities to drive streamlining projects, resulting in simplifying processes and/or sustainable saves.
- Apply external market knowledge and benchmarks and internal benchmarks and insights to identify opportunities to improve performance and practices
Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications
The role holder will ideally have knowledge and experience in the following areas:
- A detailed knowledge of WPB products and services.
- Demonstrated business knowledge, ideally experience of leading a complex global business unit with accountability for a P&L over c $0.4bn –
- Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate and influence at all levels of the organisation and with external clients.
- Experience of working with and influencing Senior Management in a matrix environment
- Self starter who is comfortable working with concepts, ambiguity and on their own initiative.
- A strong background in risk management
- Experience in cross functional roles within HSBC
- Strong commercial acumen to drive multi-channel growth in line with the HSBC Group strategy
- Highly effective stakeholder management across the region and group
- Strong commercial acumen to drive multi-channel growth in line with the HSBC group strategy
- Demonstrated knowledge of technology development and infrastructure and how this can be used to meet business needs
- Ideally to have both front and back office experience within a global banking environment
