Job description

We are seeking to appoint to the role of Head of Quality Assurance in Research. This post coordinates the operation and implementation of the University Quality Assurance in Research (QAR) system which sets out core standards of integrity and good research practice with which all University research must comply. The postholder is responsible for overseeing and operating the systems for ethical review and approval of all University research as well as the administration of all University animal research activities, regulated under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act (ASPA).

Quality Assurance in Research (QAR) and Research Integrity

  • Responsible for the development, revision and implementation of University’s quality assurance in research policies and Code of Good Practice in Research.
  • To promote good research practice as defined in the University’s Code of Good Practice in Research, ensure compliance with the UUK Concordat to Support Research Integrity and keep up-to-date with developments in the regulatory and policy requirements that govern all areas of research, internally and externally.
  • Provide on-demand advice and guidance, to University research staff and students, on all aspects of good practice in research including work under the control of the Human Tissue Act.
  • Provision and coordination of training on QAR and Research Integrity.

University Research Ethics Committee (UREC)

  • Provide leadership in the implementation and understanding of research ethics governance and principles and consult with and make recommendations to key stakeholders responsible for the development and approval of University policies, procedures and guidance.
  • Prepare and maintain the UREC ‘Policies, Governance, Procedures and Guidance’ document.
  • Run (as Secretary and Member) UREC, processing and reviewing applications for new projects and for amendment to existing projects.
  • Act as the University ‘research governance sponsor representative’ for all projects involving IRAS application, HRA approval and NHS REC review.

ASPA and Animal Related Research

  • Act as Specialist Adviser to the Establishment Licence Holder, providing technical support and advice in relation to all aspects of compliance with the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act.
  • Provide on-demand advice on all aspects of regulated animal research to University research staff and students to ensure compliance.
  • Undertake the roles of Home Office Liaison Contact (HOLC), Named Information Officer (NIO), Named Training and Competency Officer (NTCO) and Designated Establishment Licence Holder ‘alternate’ in relation to ASPA-regulated animal research.
  • To provide ongoing service of licences and administration of licence amendments, using the Home Office ASPEL online system.
  • To liaise and maintain regular contact with the University’s Named Veterinary Surgeons.

You will have:

  • Knowledge of quality assurance in research systems and their application in the higher education environment.
  • Knowledge of research ethics governance and review requirements.
  • Knowledge of Home Office systems and governance related to regulated animal research in the UK
  • Experience of working in a diverse academic research environment
