The Brief
A globally focused shipping and transportation organisation is continuing to drive an ambitious and complex change and transformational programme to deliver a service of excellence for its customers and clients worldwide. The Global CTIO has a mandate from the Maersk board to lead the Technology transformation of Maersk which will enable the Maersk business strategy to become the global integrator of container logistics through digitising the Maersk business processes and customer engagement.
The Technology function is fundamental to enable the company’s transformation and in response to this demand, our in-house technological capability is growing exponentially. We are recruiting world class talent to ensure that the technology services are modernised to enable Maersk to become a logistics integrator leveraging a competitive advantage through technology.

The Network Architecture & Engineering function is pivotal to our transformation, it is a central team within Technology Services Engineering (TSE), responsible for the network and perimeter infrastructure engineering and the associated underpinning technology services which run and secure the technology engine of Maersk.
Reporting to the Director of Network Architecture & Engineering you will serve as Head of Network Product Engineering. This is a senior level role, responsible for the engineering delivery of the product roadmaps, technical vision, design build quality, deployment and L2-to-resolution in-life operation of network and perimeter platforms, products and capabilities provided centrally and loaclly to Maersk; including leadership of a team of specialists that underpin this function.
It has a critical role to play as we continue to develop our long-term multi-technology and multi-product network and perimeter capabilities, connecting our asset, sites and people on land and at sea. Delivering best in class global connectivity and perimeter services that not only meet the need of our business today but will be a differentiator, enabling our colleagues and partners with technology solutions that are a catalyst for productivity and innovation.
Scope
All data networks provided to Maersk across Core, Edge and Cloud locations (offices, warehouses, terminals, vessels, data centres, cloud etc), and the perimeter services that protect and enable them including but not limited to:
  • Wireless Transport: Satellite | 4G/LTE | 5G

  • WAN: Internet | IP/MPLS | Next-Gen/SD WAN
  • LAN: DC Networking | SDN | Fixed & Wireless

Specific Job Requirements
Collect, collate, analyse, develop and agree network and network-based services requirements (including process and organisation) relating to existing capabilities, new capabilities, future capabilities or additional network deployment and create the appropriate detailed network design, deployment and operational plans to meet those requirements both as an individual contributor and team lead.
Work across TSE, TOP, Cyber and the Business with supporting resources to define the specifications and perform impact assessments ensuring a collaborative approach and consensus agreement of the performance and customer experience parameters of the systems, network, perimeter and network-based services to be delivered.
Participate in discussions with internal stakeholders, to influence upstream product/application architectures and offerings, IT infrastructure standardisation and related non-functional requirements.
Lead NetSecOps initiatives to ensure that network and perimeter capabilities are easily consumable by TSE Product and the business “As-a-Service’ and are simultaneously compliant with Maersk technology architecture standards and security policies
Evaluation and recommendation as design standards, vendor hardware, software and managed service platforms providing underlay, overlay, systems and tooling capability across networks and perimeter driving feature addition where appropriate.
Provide subject matter expertise to the Service Design and OSS Engineering teams to steer the definition and creation of detailed network and perimeter infrastructure product models, solution and service designs
Development and global deployment of a common engineering design framework for all network and perimeter domains including governance to ensure cycle time, cost and quality of portfolio investments.
Own the associated horizontal CAPEX and OPEX budgets and develop a view on the network cost economics associated with designs that underpin bottom-up-builds and investment cases, working closely with Network Architecture and Network Portfolio Operations teams
Maintain a feedback loop between target designs and in-life network stabilization initiatives to agree no-regret spend, integration and or avoid technical debt
The role requires effective business value driven decision-making, accountability and oversight across the portfolio of network, perimeter and Instrumentation products and capabilities, along with embedding robust standards to life-cycle manage the supporting platforms through performance management and continuous improvement.

  • Be a world class expert in the network and perimeter engineering domain, acting as a SPOC and accountable towards the Technology Operations Centre (TOC), ensuring network and perimeter deisgns, network performance and Instrumentatation tool-sets, are harmonized with roadmaps and are in line with in-life operations initiatives.
  • Ensure the successful incremental design, build, deploy and operate of the current capability stack while modernizing and transforming to enable the future strategy
  • Quality assurance of designs and templates through adoption of industry best practices
  • Provide network and perimeter capabilities as a products with streamlined fulfilment journeys such that Maersk is self-sufficient in the company’s ability to deliver on its strategic remit.
  • Lead on the data network and perimeter integration engineering of business acquired through M&A such that it realises competitive advantage for Maersk
  • Regularly provide a transparent view of network development progress, roadmap scenarios and M&A integration commitments
  • Develop deep relationships with the regional leaders and user groups across the Maersk business who rely on Technology services provided by this function
  • Drive a climate of Business Partnering and enablement whilst pursuing cost leadership
What I'll be doing – your accountabilities?
Network Product Engineering – Design engineering of global network and perimeter infrastructure balancing the adoption of next generation technologies with mature solutions across Core, Edge and Cloud:
  • Leadership and coordination of a direct and matrixed team in the evaluation, translation and execution of network, perimeter, enabling services and associated instrumentation/monitoring infrastructure requirements across all of Maersk
  • Development across all consumption domains as a disaggregated set of standardized components offering networking, perimeter and instrumentation capabilities that is secure by design with clearly defined northbound and southbound interfaces that can be dynamically orchestrated in software based on business service intent.
  • Provide leadership of overall engineering designs, processes, governance and implementation; accountable for enabling outcomes and driving competitive service economics; SLA management, KPI tracking, analysis and continuous improvement of the network and perimeter estate
  • Lead the execution of the network infrastructure consumption model and customer experience across all network and perimeter domains
  • Lead a NetSecOps/Network Reliability Engineering (NRE) function providing L2 to resolution of network and perimeter infrastructure and product escalation support for production incidents
  • Build internal, external and third-party supplier relationships to ensure full commitment and support in execution of designs
The Candidate
To be considered for this opportunity candidates will have the following capabilities.
  • A demonstrable track record operating as a Technology Leader within a globally focused business
  • Requires detailed network design engineering, integration, optimisation knowledge and expertise across all 7 layers of the OSI stack with the ability to employ in both physical and virtual contexts
  • Requires detailed understanding of linkages between designs and the accumulation of technical debt that affect the strategic intent
  • Needs to be highly analytical and comfortable operating across the business
  • Strong presentation skills, capable of articulating complex ideas with authority and making the case for adoption, with the ability to present a high-level vision and story as well as detailed analysis to underpin it. Must be experienced presenting to senior stakeholders
  • Chief Engineer/Technical Director level credibility with hands-on experience within a Systems Integrator, Telecoms Provider or large Enterprise
  • Experience in network architecture & design, technology adoption and cost evaluation in multi-vendor production environments
  • In depth knowledge in networks and the supporting ecosystem, experienced in engaging on network topics at all levels internally and externally:
    • Traditional – IP/MPLS (Routing & Switching), Internet Access (DIA|BIA), 4G/LTE FWA, xDSL|DOCSIS, Ethernet, WDM, Remote Access, LAN (fixed and Wireless), DC LAN, IPSec, Firewalls, Load Balancers, Web Proxies, WAN Optimisation, NTP/PTP and DDI
    • Next-generation – 5G, NFV, SDN, SD-WAN, EVPN, L2VPN, L3VPN, CLOS fabrics, Cloud/Virtual Networking, Cloud Exchanges, NGFW, WAF, SSE, SIEM
    • Tooling – Active and Passive Instrumentation, Network Performance Monitoring & Diagnostics and Application Performance Monitoring
    • OSS – EMS, Catalogue driven Orchestration, automation, IBN, IaC tools and Experience API integrations
    • Virtual Infrastructure –Openstack, KVM, LXC, Kubernetes, VMWare and Docker
