Job summary
As the UK’s regulator for the energy industry, Ofgem works on behalf of energy consumers to ensure that every household in the UK can rely on a safe and environmentally sustainable energy supply.
As Head of Governance and Secretariat, you will ensure the right conversations are happening at the right time and at the right level. You will take a strategic view of governance across Ofgem to ensure focus on strategic priorities and robust decision making.
You’ll lead a strategic and influential governance and secretariat function, ensuring effective governance and oversight of operational and strategic risks. You’ll ensure effective briefing and have strategic management and oversight of Ofgem’s Boards and Committees. You’ll work closely with a range of internal and external stakeholders including governance and secretariat teams at other departments and regulators.
We’re looking for someone with experience of leading a secretariat or other relevant leadership experience to provide support to Boards or Committees or other senior leaders. You’ll have experience of corporate governance and experience of working with and gaining the trust of senior leaders, Boards or Committees.

Job description
As Head of Governance and Secretariat, you will take a strategic view of governance across Ofgem to ensure focus on strategic priorities and robust decision making.
Key Responsibilities
Leading a strategic and influential governance and secretariat function, with the trust and respect of the organisation.- Effective governance, supporting robust and high-quality decision making and effective oversight of operational and strategic risks.
- Clear and well-understood standards and processes to facilitate timely and high-quality interactions between Boards and Committees and the rest of the organisation, including ensuring papers are good quality.
- Effective briefing – incorporating strong insight and analysis – for Board and Committee chairs.
- Strategic management and oversight of Ofgem’s Boards and Committees. Working with Board and Committee Chairs to plan and drive the agenda and ensure the right conversations are happening at the right time and at the right level.
- Determining appropriate handling for decisions, ensuring that the routes for engagement, governance rules and procedures are understood and adhered to throughout the organisation.
- Effective liaison with the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and other external stakeholders on governance related issues.

Person specification
The essential criteria for this role is:
Experience of leading a secretariat or other relevant leadership experience to provide support to Boards or Committees or other senior leaders.
Experience of corporate governance.
Experience of working with and gaining the trust of senior leaders, Boards or Committees.
A strategic thinker and influencer, who identifies themes and issues, makes connections to address them and can bring insight and analysis to influence others.
Strong written skills, able to distil complete information into concise, readable summaries.
