Head of Digital Trading – Food On Demand - 12m FTC

You will be working in one of the fastest growing and dynamic areas of Sainsbury’s. As a key member of the eCommerce leadership team, you will be at the heart of growing our group digital business. Best in class knowledge of our customers, channel(s) performance and market landscape will ensure we’re set to deliver a competitive and compelling offer which is loved by our Customers and well-articulated through endorsed business plans.
This role requires both direct management and strong matrix leadership capabilities. The role holder will utilise their significant influencing skills to ensure that the Food On Demand digital trading team act and work effectively with colleagues across Operations, Digital, Commercial, Change and Marketing, alongside working closely with our external partners to establish strong joint business plans that support the growth of the channel.



What you need to do:

  • Know our On Demand grocery marketplace better than anybody else, covering customer, competition and trends. Channel this knowledge to broaden our understanding of performance and sales/profit opportunities.
  • Establish a deep knowledge of who the On-Demand grocery customer is and what is driving their behaviour, utilising internal and external segmentations and data. Channel this insight to step on our internal and joint business plans to drive our overall market share and performance of the channel.
  • Working closely with our partners and internal teams including retail and operations, define a strategy for the channel which enables us to serve more customers, deliver best in class service, drive sales and grow the channel profitably.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive digital trading strategy, driving improvements in the customer experience through strong commercial decisions and an effective stakeholder network.
  • Working closely with finance, responsibility for driving the overall P&L of the channel.
  • Champion the On Demand channel across the business to drive business engagement and buy-in to help deliver the overall strategy of the channel.
  • Ensure your team are utilising all the tools and insights available to them to drive stronger digital metrics and commercial outcomes, highlighting key risks and opportunities.
  • Ensure the day-to-day relationship with partners is effective and delivering against the On Demand grocery strategy for Sainsbury’s.
  • Support the supplier revenue strategy by working closely with our N360 colleagues to maximise opportunities whilst maintain a best-in-class customer experience.
  • Working collaboratively with commercial and analytics colleagues to help define the right range, pricing, and promotional strategy for the channel.
  • Ensure the delivery of key seasonal events and missions working closely with our Marketing and Food to Order Commercial teams.
  • Encourage an insight driven culture within your digital trading teams to ensure a continuous improvement programme exists across the team along with strong examples of ‘test and learn’ activities.
  • Accountable for building solid relationships with our partners through strong communication and influencing skills.
  • Ensure strong communication processes are in place with the Commercial Trading teams to ensure scope of digital trading On Demand is understood, ways or working are clearly established, and lines of communication are clear.
  • Ensure your digital trading teamplay a key role in the promotional and category planning activities and identifying category development priorities utilising data, analytics and insights from relevant tools and reporting.
  • Support the future strategy of the channel working closely with our transformation and future channels teams to test and learn new initiatives.
  • Collaborate effectively with the Digital Product teams to ensure that Food On Demand priorities are fed in, planned, developed and executed well.
  • Within your team prioritise your resource and alignment in order to support the demands of the business.
  • Stay close to best-in-class e-Commerce practices and utilise a strong network to ensure our strategy is developing at pace.
  • As a member of the Food Digital Leadership Team, responsible for driving the overall Food Digital Strategy and people goals.
  • Deputise the Director of Food eCommerce as required. Work with legal and trading support to ensure Digital Trading operates within all legal frameworks.

What you need to know and show:

  • Passionate about eCommerce and highly motivated to drive Food digital sales through relevant and impactful propositions.
  • You have experience of building strong relationships with both external partners/suppliers and internal colleagues.
  • Strong commercial acumen supported by solid decision making.
  • You drive a ‘digital mindset’ shift across commercial and your key supply base, engaging your team, and the functions you work closely with.
  • You have strong analytical and numerical capability and can develop high quality strategies and recommendations, based on data & insight that support the P&L.
  • You will be a confident decision maker and use sound commercial judgement, to prioritise, communicate and deal effectively with fast changing scenarios.
  • Your experience to date will have given you a broad and comprehensive understanding of other business functions within a retail organisation.
  • How to coach and develop a winning team – ensuring they can make clear decisions and recommendations through an authentic leadership style
  • Make judgment calls and decisions independently and be comfortable doing so
  • Influence others to adjust their priorities where there may be conflicting concerns
  • You can delegate responsibilities and hold others to account

  • Strong people skills and ability to effectively engage colleagues & senior stakeholders across the business, an excellent communicator who will be a bridge between various elements of the organisation
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills – developing every team member
  • A calm head always – ability to break down problems into their component parts and plan effectively for resolution
