Head of Digital Trading - Food - 12 month FTC

You will be working in one of the fastest growing and dynamic areas of Sainsbury’s. As a key member of the eCommerce leadership team, you will be at the heart of growing our group digital business. Best in class knowledge of our customers, channel(s) performance and market landscape will ensure we are set to deliver a competitive and compelling offer which is loved by our customers and well-articulated through endorsed business plans.



This role requires both direct management and strong matrix leadership capabilities. The role holder will utilise their significant influencing skills to ensure that the Food Digital Trading team acts and works effectively with colleagues across Marketing, Digital, Nectar 360, Commercial and operations, utilising all available tools and insights to drive, develop and implement the strategy for their division.



What you need to do:

  • Know our Digital marketplace better than anybody else, covering customer, competition and trends. Channel this knowledge to broaden our understanding of performance and sales/profit opportunities.
  • Establish a deep knowledge of who our digital customer is and what is driving their behaviour, utilising internal and external segmentations and data. Channel this insight to step on our plans and actions.
  • Define a strategy which allows us to deliver Food digital customer events, drive sales, customer engagements and cross-brand relationships.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive digital trading strategy across the Groceries Online business, driving improvements in digital revenue growth and customer satisfaction in line with business targets for Groceries Online.
  • Ensure your team are utilising all the tools and insights available to them to drive stronger digital metrics and commercial outcomes.
  • Supports the supplier revenue strategy and delivery of targets.
  • Encourage an insight driven culture within your digital trading teams to ensure a continuous improvement programme exists across the team along with strong examples of ‘test and learn’ activities.
  • Ensure effective ways of working are in place with the Commercial Trading teams to ensure scope of digital trading is understood, ways or working are clearly established, and lines of communication are clear. Ensure digital trading teams play a key role in promotional and category planning activities and identifying category development priorities utilising data, analytics and insights from relevant tools and reporting.
  • Collaborate effectively with the Digital Product teams to ensure that Trading priorities are fed in, planned, developed and executed well.
  • Within your team prioritise your resource and alignment to support the demands of the business.
  • Stay close to best-in-class e-Commerce practices and utilise a strong network to ensure our strategy is developing at pace.
  • Work with legal and trading support to ensure Digital Trading operates within all legal frameworks.

What you need to know and show:

  • Passionate about eCommerce and highly motivated to drive Food digital sales through relevant and inspiring content and impactful propositions.
  • You drive a ‘digital mindset’ shift across commercial and your key supply base, engaging your team, and the functions you work closely with.
  • You have strong analytical and numerical capability and can develop high quality strategies and recommendations, based on data & insight.
  • You will be a confident decision maker and use sound commercial judgement, to prioritise, communicate and deal effectively with fast changing scenarios.
  • Your experience to date will have given you a broad and comprehensive understanding of other business functions within a retail organisation.
  • How to coach and develop a winning team – ensuring they can make clear decisions and recommendations through an authentic leadership style.
  • Make judgment calls and decisions independently and be comfortable doing so.
  • Influence others to adjust their priorities where there may be conflicting concerns.
  • You can delegate responsibilities and hold others to account.
  • You can spot opportunities and influence key stakeholders to drive sales.
  • Strong people skills and ability to effectively engage colleagues & senior stakeholders across the business, an excellent communicator who will be a bridge between various elements of the organisation.
  • Strong leadership and coaching skills – developing every team member.
  • A calm head always – ability to break down problems into their component parts and plan effectively for resolution.
