About the role and our team
Join our Inland Fisheries Team as a Hatchery Technician!
Within this role, you will assist the Cornaa Supervisor in operating the farm. This includes cleaning ponds, maintaining the site, moving fish, stocking reservoirs, raising new stock, feeding and counting and entering data on fish numbers including mortalities.
You’ll also be involved with altering water flows, repairing ponds and raceways, controlling pests, repairing nets, collecting mortalities and their disposal.
You’ll work alongside the Fisheries Officers with electrofishing work, assisting contractors, cleaning and preparing buildings so they are fit for purpose and progressing risk assessments.
You’ll join our friendly team, dedicated to the Inland Fisheries experience. The Cornaa Hatchery setting is set in the peaceful Ballaglass Glen, often visited by the public for its seclusion. The team is dedicated to protecting and enhancing fisheries on island both in the natural environment and for recreational angling.
What can this role offer me?
We offer training opportunities which are funded by the Department to help you develop within this role. The training includes use of machinery, first aid, pest control certification as well as Government initiated courses. The IFM (Institute of Fisheries Management) course is also available.
This role offers a 15% flexible working allowance for out of hours work.
This is a great opportunity to work with rainbow trout and supplying recreational angling opportunities to the island’s angling community. There will be opportunities to learn about quality trout rearing for stocking purposes. You will also work as part of restocking incentives for wild Atlantic Salmon populations within our river systems, capturing wild salmon and rearing their progeny to the 'first feed' stage, before returning salmon fry back to their parent waters.

Please note a basic police check is required for this post, which the Department will cover the cost of for you. A full valid driving licence and access to your own vehicle is required for this role. A uniform will also be provided. A relocation package and interview expenses are not available for this role.
