Job summary:
Responsible to the Senior Cemeteries & Grounds Maintenance Operative for all matters relating to the day-to-day operation including preparation and maintenance of graves and maintenance of grounds.
Job Activities:
General Activities and Responsibilities
- Carry out general grounds and horticultural maintenance including maintaining flower beds and any wildflower areas, grass & hedge cutting, in both Gravesend and Northfleet Cemeteries
- Excavate and backfill graves to a maximum depth of 10 feet using appropriate plant or by hand as required.
- Prepare and dress the grave ready for burial.
- Assist at grave side as necessary.
- Ensure that the Cemeteries are maintained in a safe condition at all times, particularly with regard to grave excavations and recommend improvements as necessary.
- Undertake grounds and building maintenance works in the Cemetery grounds which are not undertaken by contractors or the Councils DSO.
- Assist in the preparation of landscape improvement schemes in the Cemetery grounds implementing and maintaining such schemes where appropriate.
- Maintain and prepare public accessed buildings (toilets and chapel) where other personnel provision is not available.
- Assist in the preparation of plant and vehicle requirements ensuring safe and efficient utilisation of machinery at all times and arranging for repairs as necessary.
General
2.16 To carry out such other duties as may be required of you, commensurate with the grade and level of responsibility, as directed by management.

2.18 The post holder will carry out all duties and activities having regard to the provisions of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and in accordance with any instructions from senior members of staff under that Act or any Council or Departmental Codes of Practice or Procedures.
2.19 The post holder will comply with Statute and Council Policy in all respects.
2.20 An awareness and commitment to section 17 which places a statutory duty on police and local authorities to work in partnership to reduce crime and promote community safety. It is also required that community safety is to be a thread running through all functions of the LA
