Job description

Are you a skilled graphic designer and motion graphic designer, ready to turn top-of-the-headlines news stories into digestible, thumb-stopping content for hundreds of thousands of social media followers?

If so, then we are looking for you. We need graphic designers with an array of skills to add to our friendly team of social media experts.

No two days are the same – you could be designing content for a nationwide campaign; creating fun, short-form content for Instagram reels; or creating an innovative animation to explain a complex but life-changing policy.

Although this is advertised as a role at BEIS, we are currently working through departmental changes. This means we are in fact recruiting into roles across both the new department for Energy Security and NetZero (ESNZ) and the new department for Digital, Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). Your role could be within either department, and we welcome your preferences as part of the application process.

With a supportive team behind you and lots of learning and development opportunities, we can help you take the next step in your career and give you a fascinating insight into the heart of government.

Person specification

You will deliver polished products that suit both government and Ministerial social media channels.

  • You will work with the team on creative storytelling ideas, sometimes brainstorming right from the start of a project, sometimes working to very specific briefs designed by other social media experts or senior stakeholders.
  • You will develop graphics and animations that help further explain the department’s biggest stories in an accessible way.
  • You will work within our brand guidelines – but still pursue innovative new ways of telling stories on new channels, and contribute to brand reviews to keep our look and feel fresh.
  • You will work on both longer-term projects, such as campaigns, and projects with tight deadlines and exacting stakeholders.
  • You will need adaptability, as briefs and details can change, given the fast-paced nature of government.

It’s a busy role but it’s worth the challenge, as you will get to work on some of the most exciting projects at the heart of government – be it the future of nuclear energy, or major scientific investment and breakthroughs. We have accessible design training available if you do not already have experience with this.

Skills and Experience

We're looking for a creative, enthusiastic self-starters with strong technical expertise and an eye for design.

Experience working with high profile figures and/or journalistic experience will be helpful, although not essential.

You will be asked to provide several examples of work you have created yourself. We are looking for people who create content themselves - if you are used to directing work but are not hands-on, this is not the role for you.

  • Technical skills: Adobe suite experience is essential, in particular Photoshop and Premiere Pro. Experience using a mirrorless camera is desirable.
  • Videography skills: story boarding, filming and editing video from concept to completion, adding B-roll, subtitling and formatting for social media use. Creating content for a range of social media channels, including 19:6 Instagram reel videos.
  • Photography skills: able to use a range of camera equipment to shoot quality photos on visits and in a variety of locations. We can provide additional training if needed.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, design to tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities.
  • Understanding of how to design with accessibility in mind to ensure that digital content is inclusive for every part of society.
  • Comfortable working with senior stakeholders: able to confidently work with Special Advisers, Secretaries of State, junior ministers and Private Offices. Able to advise on communications best practice but be very flexible in approach.
  • Digital communications: understanding and expertise of digital and social media and how rich media content can have the most impact across these channels.

Behaviours

We'll assess you against these behaviours during the selection process:

  • Communicating and Influencing
  • Managing a Quality Service

Technical skills

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • Ideas - Demonstrate a practical understanding of emerging digital services, tools and trends, including techniques for optimising digital content.
  • Implementation - Create appropriate and effective content on time and to budget.

Benefits

BEIS offers a competitive mix of benefits including:

A culture of flexible working, such as job sharing, homeworking and compressed hours.

Automatic enrolment into the Civil Service Pension Scheme, with an average employer contribution of 27%.

A minimum of 25 days of paid annual leave, increasing by 1 day per year up to a maximum of 30.

An extensive range of learning & professional development opportunities, which all staff are actively encouraged to pursue.

Access to a range of retail, travel and lifestyle employee discounts.

A hybrid office/home based working model where staff will spend a norm of 40-60% of their time in the office (minimum of 40%) over a month with flex dependent on balancing business and individual need (from September 2021, depending on how the public health guidance evolves).
